An Incredible Experience

2/22/2018

Here is a link to the photos from our trip!
This past week, we had an incredible opportunity to visit Think Research Corporation (
@TRChealth) in downtown Toronto.  We had a chance to learn the origins of computer science and see first hand how computer science is being used to save lives in hospitals around the world.   We also got to spend the afternoon actually working with computer scientists and developers and to build our own paper, rock, scissors games using logic and programming.  This experience, for me, as a teacher, was truly incredible! I saw my students engaged, talking, sharing, and developing their ideas in a collaborative way.  They were amazing while there and it was even more amazing to see them work with these programmers to learn more about computer science, programming, and to be excited about how they could one day use computers to help others.
For your blog post this week, I would like you to write a thank you to Think Research for having us.  In your thank you letter, I’d like you to write down 1 thing that you thought was amazing about the trip, 2 things that you learned while there and anything else you can think of to say thank you!

Love Has NO Labels!

2/15/2018

Love is all around us!  As kind people in our global community, we always want to look for the best in people.  We know the phrase, “you can’t judge a book by its cover”.  This video is a cool visualization of that concept.   In today’s society, we see all kinds of people, no one is exactly the same, and we don’t need to judge people based on appearances but rather, we need to support and get to know people for who they are!
With all that is happening in the world, we need to think about what our core values are and what we want to stand up for.  We need to think about who we are as people and what we’ll do to help those who have less than us.  The world is going to be inherited by you, so the sooner you start thinking about how you can make a difference, the better!  Luckily to help you become the people you want to be, you have a vast support network of people who truly care about you and your well being.  You never know what form love will take, where it will come from, or who will come into your life in a positive way, so it’s vital they we stay open to meeting new people and making sure that we aren’t judging based on appearance.  This video brought tears to my eyes and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  For your comment this week, I’d like you to write a thank you note to someone who you appreciate, someone who has made a difference in your life.  SHARE THE LOVE!

Dear 100 Year Old Me!

On Monday, we will be celebrating our 100th day of school this year … 100 days! This year has flown by, and as I get older, the years seem to start going faster.  I think back and remember my grade 5 class, and it feels so recently.  As we think about 100 and 100 day, for which we are dressing up as if we’re 100 years old, I want you to think about what the world will look like when you’re 100, so 90ish years from now.  But don’t just think about the world, think about you: what will you have accomplished, what do you want to remember, what would you say to your 100 year old self.
For you blog this week, write a letter to your 100 year old self.  In this letter, you can talk about things you hope you accomplished, things you want them to remember from this year, and hopes for the world.  This is your letter to you in the future, I can’t wait to read them!

Empowering Through Commercials!

2/1/2018

This week in class we’ve been looking at different commercials and why they’re effective, what they’re selling and how they’re using their commercials to sell a product.  Rewatch the Always - Like A Girl commercial again.  While you’re watching it, think about other commercials or ads that you’ve seen that promote positivity, that empower a group, that send out a positive message.   For your blog post this week, I’d like you to find a commercial that promotes something positive and post the link below.  Once you’ve posted your link, answer the following three questions:
  1. What is the message of this commercial? How do you know?
  2. What is the product that is being sold in this commercial? How do you know?
  3. Who is the audience that this commercial is targetting?  Why do you think that?
