Building Character!

2/24/2022

As we’ve been reading Pax over the past few weeks, we have spent some time looking at characters and their individual characteristics and I hope that you’re starting to notice that each character has his/her own story, background, things they like and don’t, and their own personality.  These characters are written that way by the author.
Today it’s your turn, you get to develop a character that you will use in a few future blog posts.
For your post this week:

Create your own character that you will use in a story one day. For this character, they must have:
  • a name
  • a favourite food
  • 3 personality traits (e.g. funny or humble)
  • a flaw (something that can create conflict)
  • how would they react in a difficult situation (e.g. they didn’t do their homework)
Write down all of these things in your post below. When you’ve done that, write a paragraph from their perspective as they start their first day of grade 4. I’m so excited to see the characters that you create!

Being Grateful!

2/17/2022

The end of February can be very challenging with the snow, the weather, and the dreariness of the sky. To help combat this, we’re going to look for ways that we can see the good in the world and in the universe.
Moving into our new term and thinking about how we’re going to get better, be better, and create better, I think this it’s fair to say that happiness is key to our success.  Watch this video, presented at a TED talk on happiness. When you’ve finished watching, your job is to create your very own HAPPINESS /Gratitude JOURNAL.  There has been tons of research that explains how if we take the time to write down what we appreciate and the good things that happen in a day, our mental state becomes happier and more positive.

For your blog I’d like you to post a Gratitude Journal for this week, and write down 3 things that you were glad happened, positive events and/or things you’re thankful for.
Title your blog post “Your Name -- Gratitude Journal” and list your 3 things in numbered form, providing a full sentence(s) with DETAIL. Here’s an example:
  1. I am grateful for my family. Having Jacey, Vera, and Stella at home helps ground me, and helps me realize that I have an important role to play in helping the girls become the best people they can be. Each day I realize that they help me be better, help me realize that life is about more than myself and encourage to to also be my best.
I can’t wait to share what we are grateful for! It’s been proven that being grateful leads to a happier life. This would be a great habit to get into. Keep a journal beside your bed, and every day or even once a week (on a specific day), write down 3 things you are grateful for!

Love is LOVE!

2/10/2022

Watch the following video.
Love is all around us! As kind people in our global community, we always want to look for the best in people. We know the phrase, “you can’t judge a book by its cover”. This video is a cool visualization of that concept. In today’s society, we see all kinds of people, no one is exactly the same, and we don’t need to judge people based on appearances but rather, we need to support and get to know people for who they are!
With all that is happening in the world, we need to think about what our core values are and what we want to stand up for. We need to think about who we are as people and what we’ll do to help those who have less than us. The world is going to be inherited by you, so the sooner you start thinking about how you can make a difference, the better! Luckily to help you become the people you want to be, you have a vast support network of people who truly care about you and your well being. You never know what form love will take, where it will come from, or who will come into your life in a positive way, so it’s vital that we stay open to meeting new people and making sure that we aren’t judging based on appearance.  This video brought tears to my eyes and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  For your blog post this week, I’d like you to write a thank you letter to someone you love, to thank them for their support and kindness during these trying times.

Snow Day Memories!

2/3/2022

Watch the video above that a teacher has made about how she feels about snow days.  I found this video so entertaining, what a fun teacher she must be.  Snow days are the neatest thing for teachers because it’s one of those things that you don’t lose as you grow up.  Teachers and students love snow days the same way. They’re a freebie day, one that you don’t expect and then when they come, they’re totally yours.
For your blog post this week, I’d like you to write about the best snow day that you can remember.  Remember, when you write a retell, it’s all about capturing the day by using descriptive words and bringing the reader into the experience with you.  I will start with my example.

I woke up early, thinking, yes, there’s definitely a chance.  I rushed to the window and excitedly pulled back the curtain. “Jacey, wake up!!! SNOW DAY!!!”.  She didn’t move so I picked up the iPad and checked the website, it was real, a real snow day!” I knew that I would make the most of this day with both Jacey and Vera.  We called up our other teacher friends and after a gruelling hour of shovelling, met up with them for a snowy walk downtown.  As we all got hot chocolates and coffee at the shop, Vera fell fast asleep in the coffee shop.  After taking her picture, I realized, snow days are family days now!
