Writing SPOOKY Stories!

Halloween is coming up and it’s always a great chance to help develop our story-telling skills! A scary story is amazing because it’s not only what you write that makes it scary, it’s also in HOW you tell that story. This week, your challenge is to write a scary story (one you come up with or one that you’ve heard before). This way, on Friday, we’ll get to hear each other read our scary stories out loud in class!
Here’s a list of 13 SPOOKY WORDS that you could use to help tell your story!
To get you in the mood, here is a story a friend of mine told my girls when we were camping this summer! It’s called Hairy Toe!
If you wish to read your story and record it before class, you could use vocaroo or an app like garage band and attach the audio file as part of your homework when you submit it.

Fortune Favours the Bold!

“Fortune favours the bold. We were all supposed to write a paragraph about some time in our lives when we did something very brave and how, because of it, something good happened to us.”  Excerpt From: R. J. Palacio. “Wonder.”

The quote above is from the book Wonder

This is a quote we read in Wonder this week. We are going to do the same thing! Talk with your families about what the phrase “Fortune favours the bold'' means. Then think about a time when you were brave and something good came from it. Describe this experience in your blog post this week.

Hang Ten! And Describe it!

10/13/2022

This week we’ve been focussing on writing powerful introductions and looking at ways to ‘hook’ our readers into wanting to read more. We want to write using descriptive language, using our senses to connect our readers to the actions in our writing. We have looked at getting our readers emotionally invested in what we’re writing through the choices we make. This week, your challenge is to practice this.
Watch the above 360 video (you can look around while the video plays) and use your best descriptive language, describe what is happening in the video, create the experience you’ve viewed with your eyes with the words you write. Hook your readers in, so that they feel what you felt watching but only by reading it!

I'm Thankful!

Thanksgiving is a time to look back on all our blessings and to spend some time reflecting on the positive relationships, kind actions, blessings and the good in our lives. I hope that you get a chance to do this with your family and friends this weekend and even if you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s a good time to be grateful for all the positives in our lives. For your blog post this week, I’d like you to write a paragraph that explains WHAT you’re thankful for and WHY. It should be specific and written as a paragraph, with a topic sentence, body sentences, and a conclusion. Here’s mine:
With the smell of hot food cooking, vegetables being roasted, and a fire in the fireplace, I feel thankful. This has been another busy, crazy year but one in which I feel so lucky to have a new school, a new grade, and some great new challenges. I feel very thankful this year for my family, for Jacey, Vera, and Stella and for the ways in which they all contribute to make my life feel full, meaningful, crazy, and complete. It’s such a joy to come home to my family and having them supporting me makes me feel truly blessed. That’s why I’m thankful this holiday.
