Mr. Steltman - Redirecting ...

An Incredible Experience

2/22/2018

Here is a link to the photos from our trip!
This past week, we had an incredible opportunity to visit Think Research Corporation (
@TRChealth) in downtown Toronto.  We had a chance to learn the origins of computer science and see first hand how computer science is being used to save lives in hospitals around the world.   We also got to spend the afternoon actually working with computer scientists and developers and to build our own paper, rock, scissors games using logic and programming.  This experience, for me, as a teacher, was truly incredible! I saw my students engaged, talking, sharing, and developing their ideas in a collaborative way.  They were amazing while there and it was even more amazing to see them work with these programmers to learn more about computer science, programming, and to be excited about how they could one day use computers to help others.
For your blog post this week, I would like you to write a thank you to Think Research for having us.  In your thank you letter, I’d like you to write down 1 thing that you thought was amazing about the trip, 2 things that you learned while there and anything else you can think of to say thank you!

Dear Think Research,

I had a wonderful time, you really made us feel welcome! It was so cool when we all walked in and there were all these people were working on the computer. You guys were so polite, and generous. Oh, and then the marshmallow challenge, that was so fun. Even when we did not agree on something and then made an argument out of it, it all turned out fine. They made the coding feel so alive and fun! I know that I have never tried that type of coding but it was still fun! I also wanted to say a thank you for planning that lunch! You must of spent so much time on it; getting the cupcakes, the drinks and the pizza! It was so good by the way! After when we did the coding, so much fun! I loved that we were collaborating together to make a video game (rock, paper, scissors). Btw I think that are's ( Go Banana's ) was the best if I do say so myself.

I think that the 2 things that I learned were....

Well...huuu..I don't really know... I am just kidding! I learned lot's. I learned that you should never give up and try again and if you don't get it then try again and again and again until you finally get it! Ok let's be real...I learned more about coding! ( which I think is why we were there ) I learned about..

1. HTML - Hypertext Markup Language
2. CSS - Cascading Style Sheet
3. JS - Java Script
I think that my favourite one out of all of these is CSS. I love designing things so that is why I like it. I get to design the colour of the background, title, writing...

One other thing is...How to use the proper things at the proper time. They actually gave us a quiz! Everything hast to be the same. So this part is hard to explain and I don't want to write anymore soooo...

Juliet you can explain!

(I will give you a hint)
Everything has t one perfect!

Thank you for all your hard work that you put into this and making us feel really welcome! Write back soon! (no I am just kidding you have done enough!

Sincerely,
Juliet

Dear Think Research,

Thank you so much for making us feel so welcome! Also you teached us so much like how to use javascript to build a program. You taught us that if something doesn't work out not to give up. Also after all the work and effort you put into a program it feels good and you're glad you did it. It's an important lesson that you taught me so that's something you should be proud of! Another thing is you showed us that the past makes the future better! Also a very good lesson. You did this by teaching us all about how technology started in the past and if we had no past we would have no technology. Also the first person the build a piece of technology was so much worse then what we have now, but then people added on to it to get where we are today! They used collaboration and they didn't even know each other! Another very good lesson . The point is you taught us so much important lessons that can really change how people think!

One thing I really needed to say is the pizza was really good and your lucky you get to eat it every day! You guys deserve it!!

Mr. Steltman says you sometimes quote our writing so here it goes!!
“ no matter how old we are, Our creative and unique minds can change the world!”

We learned that when we did the marshmallow challenge and adults don't do as well as kids because we are creative in our own unique ways!!
Thank you Think Research for teaching us more than coding, how to believe we can do anything!!

Sincerely,
Cadence!!

Dear Think Research,
I would like to thank you for having us on Wednesday. I would also like to thank you for all the food and gifts we got. 1 thing that I loved about the trip was when we got to code our own rock, paper, scissors game on the computers using CSS(Cascading Style Sheet), JS(Java Script), and HTML(Hypertext Markup Language). It was also really fun when we did the marshmellow challenge to learn about teamwork.

2 things that I learned were that when you have a team, you can do anything without hesitation, and how to code a rock, paper, scissors game.

I would also like to say that it was really cool when we learned about the history of technology and that computers used to take up a whole room. Wow!

I just want to say thank you to Think Research for making all this possible.(And the bus driver for driving us there)

Oh. Here is a quote that Mr. Steltman might like(considering he always get's mad at computers)

"Never trust a computer that you can't throw out a window."

Dear Think Research,

I want to thank you for the great experience I had with you during our class visit on wednesday.

I thought is was really cool that we learned how to do proper coding. I really enjoy playing Minecraft and it gave me an opportunity to see how games are made, and how much effort is put Into them.

Another valuable lesson that day was when we would mess up over and over trying to code our simple game we didn't give up. We Kept trying until we got it right and fixed the problems. So i learned to not get frustrAted and give up, always keep on going and you will find a way to solve the problem.

But I have to say the thing i thought that was really amazing is how you gave us such an awesome lunch, it was delicious! All of my favorite things pizza, cupcakes and pop!

Sincerely,
Mika

Dear Think Research,
thank you for having us come over this week. I also want to thank for the goodies and the food we were provided with. I loved the idea of coding a game of rock paper scissors. I never had known what Java Script, HTML, and CSS were. I really amazed me how much the computer scientists we were working with us knew so much. How did they know in which of the three styles it would go in? How did they know how to run so program so smoothly and with almost no mistakes?

2 things that I learned were...
How to the history of electronics and computer science started.
and
I never had learned about the 3 coding categories.

I had a great time at Think Research and enjoyed all the things with Collaboration and Teamwork involved.
I loved the place and the area we were in.

How Mr. Steltman said they might quote our writing....

"Think Research was a new experience and it opened up new opportunities in life"

Thank you so much for the new experience ThinkResearch

Dear think research / mate

I want to thank them for everything they did
FIRST they took time of work to teach us coding on their own computers.
And they also gave the chance of a lifetime
SECOND they gave the best treat of pizza cupcakes and pop it was a
Amazing feast and they trusted us to be respectful like mr steltman told us to be.
THIRD at the end they gave us a little present it was so nice they gave us a water bottles
That were actually really nice and a notebook to right all our coding ideas down then to go with
That they gave us a pen but on the back was a tip for iphones and ipads these people were so nice I just want to thank them again for everything they did

Sincerely claire

Dear ,
Think Research And All Of Its Employees

I would like to thank you for all of the time and work that you put into us and our class.

First the thing that I liked about the trip was... Really the whole thing. When I was younger what I thought was that computers were for playing games only. In the past years I started thinking that less and less. But then I went to Think Research and then I learned that playing games was only a millionth of what you can do on computers. Also that playing games is not the most fun thing that you can do on computers by far.

Second I want to thank them for making this the most fun I've had in a long time. They made me try to make new things like marsh mellow structures and rock paper scissors and step out of my comfort zone of games like red ball https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/192153224/. Making Rock Paper Scissors was the most challenging thing I had done in a while. I mean things I had done before only used drag and drop coding but Rock Paper scissors used HTML CS and Java Script. That is three aspects when I'm only used to doing one.

Finally I would like to thank them for teaching me so much about the history of coding and computers. I didn't know they went back to wooden items that counted, and I didn't know that at one point they took up whole rooms. Is it not so cool that the term bug came from real bugs glitching the system? It fully blew my mind that there was so much history behind computers. It is so cool that the people there knew that much history.I thought history class was supposed to be boring!

Once again thank you so much Think Research for teaching me so much and making this the most fun interactive field trip ever!

Sincerly,

Dear Think Research,

Hello! On Wednesday we visited your work space and to be honest, I learned SO MUCH! I'm writing this to you to say thank you. Thank you for teaching us so much about coding and creating games, it was so much fun! When I came home I went on to codepen.io and showed my parents and they thought it was amazing! You taught me so much about coding. THANK YOU!!!!!

Dear Think Research,

Thank you for letting us visit you on February 21, 2018. It was an amazing experience. You made our faces light up with joy. You were kind to us the whole time. I also want to thank you for the food and goody bags. I loved the marshmallow challenge. This was my very first time doing it. Our team came fourth or third from the bottom, but still, it was awesome. I also loved the coding part. I coded a Rock, Paper and Scissors game with JavaScript, CSS and HTML.

The first thing that I found out is that JS, CSS and HTML are all programming Languages. JS stands for JavaScript. It controls the parts of the program that you interact with. CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheet. CSS controls the design of the program. The last programing language we learned is called HTML. HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. It is the code of the basic structure and content of the program. If programing was a house then HTML is the exterior. CSS are all the decoration in the house. And JS are the interactive items of the house like a microwave, TV and sink.

The second thing that I learned is the history of coding and computers. I discovered that computers in the 1950’s took up the WHOLE room. Also I found out that two famous technology companies Apple and Microsoft had a technology war. I was also not aware that programing and computers started with an abacus. By the way, the phrase “Ugh, I have a BUG in my program” actually came from real bugs that were glitching out the system!

I really appreciated you inviting us over. I wish I could go see you awesome people someday again.

Sincerely,
Alex T.

Dear people of think research corp,

It was a pleasure to meet you and code with you. I had an amazing time and it was super fun, I loved the cake, ice cream, and unicorn game that I made with my group and I loved how we used Erick's spelling on amazon to search for a "gourd chine" (gold chain) and gichi flip flops.

One thing that I thought was awesome was lunch and coding (i know that was two things) lunch was awesome because I could sit with my friends and feel amazing because I did not have to lunch monitor a class of rangy kids. Coding was also awesome because we figured out problems and other things too. I also learned a whole lot of things that I would need to know to become a web designer!

Two or maybe three things that I learned were: there are other ways to write scripts, not just the ones that Mr.Steltman taught us. I also learned that every website has a code and it's complicated.

So that is why I wanted to say thank you,

sincerely,
Sabina!

Dear, Think Research

Thank you so much for even inviting us in the first place! We had so much fun computer coding, eating and learning! Thank you so much for taking the time to teach us about the history of computer science, providing materials for the marshmallow challenge, providing pizza and cupcakes (!!!!!!!), letting us code with professionals and giving us LOOT BAGS!! (IKR) I just want you to know that we appreciate you guys very much and we had lodes of fun!! Thanks a million! (◕ω◕✿)

I thought it was incredible how many computers you guys have and that you actually know how to use those crazy languages without even having to stop and think about it!! IT'S CRAZY!!!!!!! Something that I learned was how to use JS or JavaScript. I mean I'm definitely nowhere near as good as you guys are but still... I learned the basics! Another thing was more about inspect mode. I mean I knew how to use it and change the words on websites but I never knew all the cool things like changing size, color and MORE!

I want you to know that all of us appreciate you and once again,
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! You taught us so much and gave us a lot of joy!

Sincerely, Ciaran (though you probably don't remember my name)

Dear Think Research...wait, I didn't go! But thank you anyway for the bag of stuff.

So you may be wondering what I'm doing here writing this blog post. I didn't go so what am I doing here? Some of you may be thinking that you don't even care about the fact my blog post and you're imagining taking down the entire zombie apocalypse on your own (Kevin). But I'm here for one reason...MY DESKTOP.
So last week, I didn't do my homework. But I tried to do it, believe me... I can't NOT have a perfect record of homework done. BUT I COULDN'T. And you know why? It's because of my DESKTOP. It wouldn't even turn on. I pressed that on button for so long that you would be able to run ten kilometres. I waited for a long time after each press. I felt like ten years.
UHGGGGGGGGG
Then the screen light popped on...FINALLY!
I called my mom so she could put in the code and...it didn't work.

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY this is how I felt:

Dear think research (including mate),
First of all I want to say thank you for all the time and effort you put into this event. I also want to thank for the opportunity of learning more coding, teamwork and learning the basics to the British language .
The employees were super energetic and they kept things fun!

Think research taught us a lot more than I expected. We learned the history around computer science and how things worked, like when they taught us the bug fix fact I was mind blown and I just couldn't get out of my mind how cool the history of the word comes from! They also taught us more about teamwork and how team work makes the dream work like our one and only LCA news, and I hoped you watched the traffic episode it was a hit!

Something I thought was incredible was how much the office space looked like a Buzzfeed office, incredible right. But something I do actually find incredible is that we are very fortunate to learn computer science because not many people have the opportunity to learn the coding language or even get to code.

Thank you one more time you're supercalafradgilisticexpialadocious!

Sincerely,
the valley girl ( as mate calls it) .

Dear Think Research
I wanted to thank you for the awesome experience.I thought that it was so cool that we got to work with real coders and also they took time off just for us so that they could teach us to code.Second I also thought it was great that they gave us a little challenge so that we could learn how to collaborate better. I thought that it was so cool that they made us make a tower out of spaghetti, marshmallow, tape and also string. It was so fun.Third I loved the coding part, it was my favorite. I think that it was a great idea that they taught us how to make a rock paper scissors game. And I also thought that when we were making the game we learned how to collaborate better so we did collaborate a lot.The final thing was that at the end they gave us little presents! I loved the water bottle and also the pen.I loved Think Research. I think that it was my favorite field trip I have ever had. I really enjoyed it so thank you Think Research for the awesome experience.

and two things that I learned was how to ataxy make a game / code
"cough, cough" mr. Steltman "cough, cough"

Dear think research,

Hi think research I am making this letter to say thank you for teaching us how to code better and it was amazing that we made a rock paper scissors game and I didn't even know what java script, css and html. I had a great experience of coding it was amazing sight to see all that pizza and drinks just kidding. It was so cool to see the slideshow of the computer science history and we had to collaborate in the spaghetti sticks to make the towers and the hardest thing was trying to get the spaghetti sticks together without snapping them.

Dear Think Research thank you for teaching me so much about coding I will always remember that totally awesome rock, paper, scissors game they showed me and how they thought me all the rules of CSS(Cascading Style Sheet), JS(Java Script), and HTML(Hypertext Markup Language). Also thank you so much for the delicious snacks like cupcakes, pizza and pop and for teaching me a bit about B10N4RY C0D3!

I learned a lot of coding using more than Python and that was really fun. I liked how Jumaana used a quote about computers so I'm going to put a quote here ⬇⬇⬇

Thank you think research for........

Thank you think research for setting up a time where you were able to teach children or grade 5 students the basics of coding and then go onto something where we all get a chance to code. Also, thank you for all the yummy food and the awesome bus ride to the company. Thank you for the loot bag (the cookie, (yum!) the note book and the pen). I did not expect that! It was soooo cool to learn about about all of the latest and greatest technology.
I was fun to learn about JAVA SCRIPT, HTML and CSS. I was able to learn about these while coding a fun rock, paper and scissor game which was also really really really fun!
