Sugar?  Is it really in everything?!?

6/10/2016

I saw this very neat video on how sugar affects our brains.  This video comes from Ted Ed, the education side of ted talks.  This is one of their most watched videos ever.  Why do you think it’s so popular?  Watch the video and then write down three thoughts, wonderings, or questions that you had regarding this video.  The brain is such a cool part of our body, and works with our physical, mental, and emotional well-being.  Changing the way we think, we eat, and our negative habits, helps us change the way our brain functions, which will give us better day to day lives.  In your blog post answer:
Question 1: Write your three wonderings, learnings or questions and as a further challenge, can you find 5 items in your kitchen/fridge that don’t have sugar in them?  Write them down.
Question 2:  If you were a parent, what rules would you impose on your children to help them grow up healthy?  Write down 3 rules that you think would be fair.
Challenge 3:
Can you go 24 hours without eating any processed sugar?  Good Luck!

It is very important not to have sugar. You can have it once in a while, but not every single day. Limit your self. When I watched the video, I didn't know how much sugar is in food. When they showed the part with the brain and all the different tastes, I was very surprised.

Question 1 The five items that were in my kitchen/fridge were: Nuts, Carrots, cauliflower, lettuce and chia seed. Those are the five items in my kitchen/fridge that don't have processed sugar.

Question 2 If I were a parent, I would tell them to

1 have sugar mostly on special occasions.

2 Have sugar if they have permission.

3 To have sugar two times a week.

Question 1: Wonderings, Learnings, and Questions
1. I learned that broccoli does not effect the brain. This is because broccoli has no sugar.

2. The second fact I learned about our brains is there are different sections in our brains like sweet, bitter, salty and umami.

3. I wonder if watermelons are just like sugar but good sugar.

Question 2: Rules
1. The first rule is putting some good (not annoying) fruits like mangoes, watermelon, and peaches in a countainer for school lunches.

2. The second rule is kids will have 10 minutes each day to eat their candy.

3. The last rule is kids can eat fast-food every Wednesday.

I really love sugar. Like honestly I probably eat it everyday. It's the best but sometimes it can be really bad for us like they were showing us in the video. The video also showed us that it had a really bad affect on our bodies and our brains to. Anyways here are my answers to the 3 questions...

~Question 1

My question I have is...
Can eating too much sugar cause life threatening conditions?

I learned that...
There are lot's and lot's of different types of sugars.

~Question 2

If I was a parent my 3 rules for helping my children to grow up healthy would be...

~Only sugar on the weekends or on special occasions.
This rule would help the child not be exposed to sugar as much and the child would also have better teeth because their teeth wouldn't rote. Also this would prevent them from getting sick a lot and getting sick often.

~Meatless Monday.
That would help my children or child because if children eat to much meat and not enough veggies then that would prevent their bodies from getting key vitamins into their body and prevent them from growing and living a healthy life.

~Fast foods only once a month.
Fast food can ruin a child's brain and can take their minds of work and school and that is really important in life. Fast food can also make kids and even adults very sick. Fast food is made so it can be made quickly and serve hot. Which means they use a LOT of oil and grease which means that the child has a higher chance of getting fat because of eating a lot of fast food.

~Question 3

This last assignment was actually fairly easy because of fasting. Now I don't know if that counts but I tried it either way. So on Saturday on 3:00am I got up to eat food before I start fasting and I just ate some salad and drank some water. Then it was off to bed and no eating or drinking anything until 9:00pm. Anyways I didn't eat any sugar or processed sugar for 24 hours which was on Saturday.

Those are my answers to the 3 questions for this blog post to end this of here is a quote by Nancy Peterson:

"Losing a pound isn't necessarily a reward. Being healthy and feeling good about yourself is the reward."

Ok Toodles!!

Ok I forgot to write the 5 things in the fridge so here it is:

The 5 things that I found in my fridge that didn't have any processed sugar were:
~"I can't believe it's not butter" butter
~Garlic paste
~Old dutch salsa
~Chili peppers
~Sliced Jalapeno peppers

Those are just 5 things that I found in my fridge that had no processed sugar.

Ok sorry! Bye

The video I watched was really interesting and I learned a lot these are my responses:

Question 1: Write your three wonderings, learnings or questions and as a further challenge, can you find 5 items in your kitchen/fridge that don’t have sugar in them? Write them down.

1. I learned and was really surprised to know that sugar acts like a drug in your body, even though it is not a real drug, except that it makes the same effect in your body a side from the cancer and stuff..

2. I learned that there are a lot of types of sugar, like Starch, Dexrose,Lactose,Maltose,Sucrose, and Glucose

3. I wonder why sugar is sometimes in salty food?

The five things I have in my fridge that don’t contain sugar are
~Whole-grain bread
~ Rice
~ Milk
~Eggs
~Water

The three rules I would have in my household for healthy eating would be:

~Balance there meals, Everyone loves Junk food and sometimes you can’t stop eating it so I would tell my kids that they can eat as much as junk food as they want, ( But I would have to stop them) and then they would have to balance it out with Healthy food like Vegetables and other healthy food. ( I am not going to be a very good parent)

~I would let my kids pack there own lunch, but give them a strict menu like they have to have one fruit or veggies and other stuff, because I don’t want to give them something that they don’t like, and have them skip a meal because of something they don't like.

~I would limit them to 1 hour maximum T.V, (I am not paying for Netflix) because to keep yourself healthy you need to limit yourself no matter how hard it is,Especially T.V because it can strain your eyes.

Those are my rules for my kids to let them have a
healthy life.

1.Can you go 24 hours without eating any processed sugar?
The answer is NO!

I think sugar is a little bit important. You can have it once in a while, but not every single day. Sugar behaves a lot like drugs. You can become very addicted to it, and it can cause negative effects on your brain.

1. Lettuce, tomatoes, hot dogs, burgers, and that thing I can't identify (Mom calls it "fish")
Those are the stuff I have in my fridge that don't have processed sugar.

2.If I was a parent, I would make sure my kids would eat healthy by...

a) Showing them that broccoli isn't poisonous by trying it.
b) Giving the children privileges if they eat veggies
c) Just tell them that they are gonna die from diabetes if they don't eat healthy.

3. I'll try, but I don't know if I can do it!

Bye!

Most of the things I eat has a lot of sugar. I don't really think I can go a day without proccessed sugar. But I also didn't really know the negative effects that it has on your brain. Just like a lot of things, it can be good for you, but too much is not good.

I think this video is so popular because it shows people what sugar can do to you, because some people can not know what is happening with their bodies.

Q1~
I learned that... Eating a variety of different foods will give you all the nutrients you need

My question is... Is there any foods that do not have any natural or proccessed sugars?

I learned that... there is many different kind of sugar.

Here are 5 things I found in my kitchen without proccessed sugar...
-grapes
-quinoa
-strawberries
-carrots
-bread

Q2~
My rules would be...

1.Have only one thing having added sugar in their lunch everyday
2.Have only 3 meals a day
3.Make sure they are having the correct servings from each food group

Q3~
Can you go 24 hours without eating any processed sugar?
haha no

2. If I was a parent and a made three rules for my kids about how much sugar they can have a day is.
Two sugar stuff a day, After you have a your sugar snack you have to play outside, Or if you order a big sugar then at Tim Hortons you can have it day by day.

3. I can not do the challage I tried but at the end I had a small Kit.Kat

Question 1:
My first wondering was, what would happen to your body if you only ate processed sugar and never natural sugar!
I learned that there are more than one signal in your body telling you that you want more sugar.
My last question is, What would happen if you don't have any sugar in your body.

The five things in my fridge without sugar : Lemon, Lime, Broccoli, Celery and Pepper.

Question 2:
The three rules I would have for my kids are
#1 The only processed sugar that can go in your body is when it is a special occasion like Halloween, Christmas and something like that. Even though they might lie to me, well at least I know they aren't eating so much processed sugar in the house.
#2 If my kids are eating too much processed sugar, some foods would be banned.
#3 If you don't need the sugar, you can't buy it…

Question 3:
I don't know if I can survive 24 hours...

I think that a lot of kids eat sugar to much and it effects them in really negative ways. People that eat sugar all the time know that it tastes good, but probably have no idea on the outcome that it will have on them. I think that it is very important to not have to much sugar and to keep your diet balanced.

Question 1;

1: Does sugar come in any forms that won't threaten or hurt us in any health or physical ways?

2: How much sugar do you need to have to make it have an effect on you?

3: What types of sugar are their?

Challenge #1;

1: Salt

2: Tomatoes

3: Lettuce

4: Beer

5: Peppers

Challenge #2;

If I was a parent and I had to make 3 rules they would be...

1: You can only have sugar if you have eaten all of your healthy foods first.

2: No sugary items of food unless you have given permission.

3: Mostly only on special occasions.

Question 1:

Questions I have:

-What will happen if you don’t eat sugar for the rest of your life
-What will happen if you eat too much sugar

What I learned:

Sugar gets added to many thing like yogurt to make it taste better
Our brain has something called the Cerebral Cortex which inside has the reward system

Here are the five things I found in my kitchen that don’t have sugar in them:

- Bread
-Apples
-Popcorn
-Avocado
-Strawberries

Question 2:

More 3 rules if a was a parent would be:

-Only 1 treats a day (for dessert)
-Make sure they pack a healthy lunch
-Make different things for dinner each night

Question 3:

There’s no way I can go 24 hours without eating processed sugar

Wow! That video is very informative. I didn't think sugar was so important until after watching the video. I had a bunch of wonders and I learnt a lot, but we only had to do three so here they are...

1. The brain wants you to try new foods. That is because the brain wants to detect rotten food and because we have a big variety of food and we need to have all the nutrients from that food.

2. I also learned that there are plenty of types of sugar. That is why so many foods have sugar in them. Some of them are good like natural sugar in fruit but processed sugar in candy is way worse.

3. Is sugar good to have in any cases? Like is it good to have sugar or bad to have none?

Here are the five things I found in my kitchen...

~Eggs
~Cheese
~Bread
~Rice Cakes
~Raspberries

Here are my three rules...

1. Have 1 thing with added sugar a day. Then he/she will get used to not having that much sugar.

2. Try a new food every day. Each dinner or lunch or breakfast will have a new food for he/she to try.

3. Eating the equally amount of food group. If he/she had toast with butter for breakfast then he/she will have chicken for lunch.

I did the challenge! It was painful but I got through it! I started on Tuesday at 8:00pm to Wednesday 8:00pm. It was hard going through all my cabinets trying to find a food that I will like and that has no added sugar. At least I did it and it actually felt good! I want to try doing that 3 times a month. Even that will help!

Q 1: Wondering, learning, and questions.
I wonder if you don't eat sugar at all would you be healthy?
I learned when we taste stuff our tongue sand a signal to a part of our brain and then tell us if we want to do it again or not.
My question is do sugar effect you sleep?

5 things that don't have sugar in them: ( most of them have 1 gram of sugar, is that okey?
1. butter
2. cheese
3. water
4. salad sauce
5. meats

Q 2.

1. Tell my kids what's good for them and what's bad.
2. Make sure put enough food in their lunch bag.
3. Make sure they don't skip a meal.

6/15/2016 03:17:09 pm

Wow! I found watching that video very interesting. I find it so cool to learn about all these things going on in our brain by just having one bite of cake. The reward system was the coolest thing though. It's cool to think that there is something in our body in which tells us if we should eat more or stop.

5 things in my fridge...
-
-Butter
-Chicken
-Strawberries
-avocado
-Mayo

Question 1

What happens if one cuts sugar out for the rest of their life?
Why is sugar such a dangerous substance?

My 3 rules...

1. Having at least one fruit and one vegetable a day, so he/she will get used to having a nutritional diet.

2. Having a new food everyday. Which will help him/her have a wide range of foods to try.

3. Having only 1 treat per day.

Question 3

Although I did not go a full 24 hours without sugar I still only had 1-2 things with sugar in it which is still pretty close! Remember "It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you NOT"

Sugar is something everyone likes to eat and its hard to control but you have to realize that even though it tastes really good it is actually really unhealthy and you could get many illness like diabetes.

Question 1: My question is What is the worst illness you can get from too much sugar?

What I learned: sugar is a term described as a class of molecules called carbohydrate .

Question 2: Here are the things I found in my fridge and kitchen that had no added sugar.
-Lettuce
-watermelon
-potatoes
-onion
-spices

Question 3:
The three rules I would have if I was a parent would be...
1. Teach them all about sugar and how its bad for you
2.Make sure they eat all there healthy lunch or dinner before they can get a treat
3.Have sugar only if they have permission

Question 1.5
Can you find 5 items in your kitchen/fridge that don’t have sugar in them?
Raspberries
Nectarines
Apples
Pears
Tomatoes
Question 2: If you were a parent, what rules would you impose on your children to help them grow up healthy? My 3 rules that I think would be fair are…
Eat something new everyday. I am saying this because kids our age aren’t used to taking risks (Tuesday June 14,2016 to be exact) if we as a class hadn’t gone on Tuesday, I probably wouldn’t have EVER gone in my life! Or even foods, trying a new food.
Pack them a healthy lunch everyday. Not just any regular lunch, a good lunch.
And finally only eat healthy, not always but most of the time, and by that I mean Not A LOT of sugar.
And let’s end with a quote…
Sugar and spice and everything nice, that’s what little girls are made of!

WOWZA I knew sugar isn't good for you but I now now why I hate broccoli. I also learned that sugar is sometimes like a drug if you have to much sugar because if you have to much you can get to love it then you can stop having it. So eat less sugar because it is bad for you if you don't stop having a lot and I am not say that everyone here is having to much sugar but we all know that people love sugar.

Ok I am going to change it up a little bit and write everything in a story.

Here it goes.

It was a bright sunny day in sugarville, Henry had just woken up.

His mom told him not to have sugar but his mom tells him a lot of stuff and he doesn't listen so why should he start now.

It is 6:00 am.

He is up early to pack his own lunch.

3 sour keys, 1 slice of cake, Some jellybeans McDonalds french fries and a bottle of 7up.

Then he thought to himself if this was actually healthy.

He thought it was unhealthy so he added an apple slice.

When it was lunchtime at school he was so excited.

After he ate everything he got really jumpy.

Then in his presentation 5th period he passed out because he had too much sugar.

Henry had a sugar crash.

Meanwhile in Henry fridge the rat family found 5 items with no processed sugar.

1.Corn on the cob

2.Pears

3.Carrots

4.Apples

5.Milk

Meanwhile ( Again ) At the hospital.

Henry is laying there so sad and he is about to die.

Henry does not have much time left.

" I know I will never have kids but if I did this is what I would tell them about sugar.

1. DON'T EAT IT!!! (just don't)

2. If you do don't have a lot at a time.

3. Last but certainly not least ( Do not end up like me )

Thud!

Just like that Henry had died.

The end.

Sorry for the sad ending but it had to end somehow.

-Habs rule.

THE END!

P.S. I did not finish the 24 hour challenge

Very interesting story

That video was pretty cool! The coolest part in the video was probably the rewards system. I find it amazing how powerful our brains are! Just think... They make us do everything.

1) Write your three wonderings, learnings or questions?

a. Why is it sugar that makes people unhealthy or crazy?

b. There are sugar receptors in your brain and stomach.

c. alcohol nicotine and heroin send dopamine into overdrive leading some people to constantly see that high.

1.5) Can you find 5 items in your kitchen/fridge that don’t have sugar in them?

-Raspberries
-Strawberries
-Pesto sauce
-My dogs pills
-Rice

2) If you were a parent, what rules would you impose on your children to help them grow up healthy?

If I were a parent I would say to...

a. Have healthy lunches with only one treat a day.

b. Have enough fruits and vegetables everyday to stay healthy.

c. DON'T EAT TOO MUCH SUGAR A DAY OR YOU WILL DIE! YOU WILL ACCEPT THE SAME FATE AS HENRY!

I know sugar is bad for me and that I should try and resist as much as I can , but that video made it much more clear why people crave sugar and why it is so hard to resist. I love sugar just as much as anybody else does , but after watching this video I realized that sugar is in a lot more things than I thought and when I am looking on a food to see the nutritional facts I should look not only for the word sugar but also for sucrose, lactose and etc. ( basically anything with a ose on the end of the word) This video actually taught me a lot about sugar and why it is so rewarding when you eat it. I thought sugar was just this food that people put in food to make it taste more sweet, and to make people want to eat more, but I found out in this video that their is actually a lot of science behind sugar and why people crave it so much. Who would of thought?

Question 1: write down three wonderings and learnings

1~ my first question or learning is ...
Is it bad to have absolutely no sugar at all for the rest of my life? or is it something that is bad for you , but you still need some in your body to survive.

2~ my second question or learning is...
I learned that sugar is in a lot of things because people put in in their food to make it taste better to people and to make people want to buy more.

3~ my third question or learning is...
Why cant they just dopamine into broccoli to make kids like it?

Question 1.5 : can you find three things in your fridge that have no sugar in them?

The answer is yes and here they are

1) The first thing in my fridge with no sugar is ... PEPPERS!!!!
2) the second thing in my kitchen with no sugar is ... Broccoli!!!!!!!
3) the third thing in my kitchen with no sugar is ... Cauliflower!!!!!
4) the fourth thing in my kitchen with no sugar is ... Chickpeas
5) the fifth thing in my kitchen with no sugar is ... Green beans!!!!

Question 2 : If I was a parent what rules would I have to make my children healthy?

Well I would have lots of rules because I want my kids to be healthy and just three of those rules are.

1) my first rule that I would have if I was a parent to keep my kids healthy would be : no fast food unless we need to. I would put in this rule because a lot of times people go out to fast food when they don't need when they can have a piece of toast or something like that at home. I have been guilty a couple times but I try not to because fast food also cost money and it is a lot cheaper when I have a piece of toast at home. Also people just put loads and loads of salty into fast food , food so I try and stay away from that the most I can because it is definitely not the healthiest choice out their.

2) my second rule that I would enforce on my kids to keep them healthy would be : Limit the amount of sugary snack in lunches. A lot of people don't have time to pack a decent healthy snack so they just put sugary stuff in the lunch-bag and head of to school. But that is really bad because with all that sugary stuff in peoples lunch bags kids when they get healthy stuff with not a lot of sugar will not like it as much as they did with the sugary snack, because they are used to gushers and sugary stuff like that. I am probably not even going to buy those things because then if I don't have those unhealthy sugary stuff I wont put it in my kids lunched.

3) My third rule that I would enforce on my kids to keep them healthy would be : have a healthy snack after school and a couple days of the week after you have a healthy snack you can have a sugary snack. I would enforce this rule because a lot of times after school kids have a unhealthy and sugary snack at home. I am guilty sometimes of this to but I try to limit myself because once I eat sugar I don't want to stop. This will also teach my kids that if you eat healthy you can sometimes get a reward of something not healthy.

Question three: Can you go 24 hours without eating any processed sugar?

I did the challenge and I completed it but let me tell you it was very hard to find things with no sugar at all. I started on Wednesday at 8:00 pm and then I finished at 8:00 on Thursday. It was really hard to find things for my lunch and for breakfast that had no sugar in them at all but I did it. It was really frustrating because I toasted a piece of raisin break but then Noah read the package and it had sugar so then I just had a plain price of toast and a banana for breakfast. ( the banana was not to bad but the plain toast was terrible)

I never knew that I was so tough to find foods with no sugar at all and I actually learned that so much things that I thought were sugar free actually have a bit of sugar. Sugar is such a small thing but it can make you go crazy.

How does the tongue send signals to the brain when we eat sweet stuff.Do all these sweet contents have to have weird names. How does the stomach send signals to the brain.

I mean who does not like sugar, if you do not like to eat sugar I am calling a doctor to get you looked at, if there is a ice cream cake with a sticky note on it that says "eat me" you are going to eat. Everyone loves sugar and once you take the first bite, you can never stop. The reason for this being is the sugar in what ever you are eating expands your stomach so you have more room to eat as much sugar as you like. Everything has sugar, EVERYTHING, even stuff like fruits and vegetables can have lots of sugar, but... the difference between a apple and a cookie is the apple has natural sugar which is a lot healthier than a cookie which has processed sugar, and then added sugar on top. A surprising source of sugar is a smoothie, I know say that's ironic because "it only has fruit which only has natural sugar" but when a smoothie is commercially prepared it can have a lot of sugar, how much exactly, well one smoothie has a whopping 36 grams of sugar. So lot's of different things have sugar so that is why you have to be careful, but 1 slice of that ice cream cake that I was talking about earlier would not kill you. For this weeks blog post we are sup post answer the 3 questions so here it goes.

Question number 1!!!!!!!: Write your three wanderings, leanings or questions and as a further challenge, can you find 5 items in your kitchen/fridge that don’t have sugar in them?

One of my wanderings that I had during the video was: in the video at the start, it talked about how there were so many of these different types of sugar such as: glucose, sucrose, maltose, lactose, dextrose, starch, high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice, raw sugar and honey so I wondered what makes them all a type of sugar, is it the fibre or the nutrition that it has in the food that quality's it food sugar.

Here is my second wondering;

2. My second wondering was: in the video it said that alcohol, nicotine and heroin make the dopamine in the brain to "explode" which causes you to be "high" and it also said that sugar has a similar effect because it does not cause you to be "high" but it does give a good feeling it leaves you wanting more, so what I thought is how does the brain create that really good feeling that you have after inducing one of the things I just named and how does it create that addiction to the substance.

Here is my third point:

3. For my third one I am going to do one of the facts that I learned while watching the video and that fact is: that there are so many types of sugar such as glucose, sucrose, maltose, lactose, dextrose, starch, high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice, raw sugar and honey and that just amazes me that there are that many types of sugar.

The 5 things that I found in my kitchen that did not have sugar is:

Grapes (they have natural sugar which is different because natural sugar is much healthier that processed sugar and they also add sugar )

Some cocoa chip cookies (they had no added sugar so it is okay for the challenge)

Some crackers (also said no added sugar on the package, so they are also okay)

Peppers (natural sugar)

Bananas (natural sugar)

Those were my observations/points/question/ :) / sugar free stuff in my kitchen/ next question

2. As I said in my introduction 1 piece of that delicious ice cream cake would not hurt, but to much sugar intake can lead to diabetes which can lead to death. So as a parent when I am older I plan to limit my kids sugar intake and these would be the rules.

1. The first rule for my kids is you only have stuff below 15 grams of sugar without asking me, and if you want to have something with over 15 grams of sugar you have to ask me and I write it down and you would not be able to have that tomorrow.

2. The second rule that I would have for my kids when I grow up is that we would only go out for dinner once a month because food and drinks at restaurants can have lots, and lots of sugar and by cooking at home (I also LOVE to cook) we are taking away lots of that unnecessary sugar, who cares if your kid hates your cooking and feeds it to the pet pig when are not looking, stay home and cook what you want to eat.

3. The third rule is plain and simple just have this in mind "do you want to be healthy" and if they do they would keep in mind to try to limit their sugar intake.

Here is the 3 question.

3. This was really interesting for me to do the challenge but I successfully completed it, for me it started at 8:00 P.M on Wednesday night and it ended for me on 8:00 P.M on Thursday night, I found it really challenging because it was really hard to find food that I could put in my lunch and really hard to find something that I could eat for breakfast and dinner so what I did have for breakfast that day was toast with butter, and for lunch I had a hot dog (don't worry I checked the label no sugar) and for dinner I had chicken and salad with no dressing (so pretty much just lettuce and peppers) but I did make through the challenge without

It cut out this part so I will just repeat it so without eating sugar, I was also lucky because I found cookies that had no sugar and crackers that had no sugar. I actually got really mad at one point because I am pretty sure my older brother (Cameron) at 15 freezies and 15 pops to irritate me.

If you want to do the 24 hour no sugar challenge again, because it has lots of health benefits, then I recommend trying to use sugar substitutes to replace the sugar.

That all for me today BYE!!!!!!!!
