Screen Time Log!

6/1/2018

Picture
For your blog post this week, I have a bit of a challenge for you.   Can you track the amount of time that you spend on screens (computer, tv, iPad, etc.) from Sunday to Thursday.  Track the hours of the following table. Once you’ve done this I’d like you to reflect on it.
Did you know that the maximum amount of screen time that is healthy is 2 hours per day? What do you notice about your screen time usage?  Are you using more or less than the average? What can we do to make sure that we’re using our time in ways that are healthy? For your blog post this week, please write down five alternate ways that students could choose to use their time as opposed to being on screens.

I'm writing this blog right now because I am here to tell you that I will guarantee you that I only use 1 hour of screen time (AT HOME because if you meant at school too then we would all be failing this) and that will be to write this homework...I will keep you updated.

Here are my FIVE ALTERNATE THINGS

1. Biking, walking, anything in that general area (especially with my dog)
2. Drawing (okay so sometimes when I get it I use my Ipad to animate things because that's super fun but I don't usually do that)
3. Writing down ideas for short stories, lyrics and more
4.Playing with said dog because doing anything with her is awesome
5. Playing with friends.

I am only allowed screens on weekends. But on weekends I am allowed a lot of screen time about 120-240 minuets. So I every normal week have at most 480-520 minuets. In one week what you should be using 840 minuets maximum.(120 minuets per day X 7 days a week=840) So I am (at least) 320 minuets under the 120 minuets a day.

I use 5 to 7 hours a week of screen time for school related work. Outside of school time, I play about 0 hours and 0 min per week until July. I use less than the average screen time a week. Any parent can follow my mom‘s lead and set up a screen time limits using Microsoft Family setting for 30 minutes a day max and block all games. :D

These are five things we can do than looking at screens.

1.Water balloon fight. You will get lots of fun splashing everyone with water! It's also refreshing.
2.Go ride on out bikes. Just get on your bike and ride around your neighborhood or street a couple of times. How hard could it be?!
3.Read a book. Books are very interesting to read. So just get off your device and go read for about 1 hour. It’s always good to read!
4.Go to the park. Swing, ride down a slide, run around, climb a rock climbing wall. So many things at a park that you an do!
5.Take a walk. Go walk around your block or neighborhood for 30 minutes. On the way, you might meet some friends. You will also get exercise.

Those are 5 things you can do instead of looking a device!

I think that students should try to find other efficent ways to use their time like....

spending time with family
cleaning somthing
playing outside
doing a craft
playing with friends
learning something new
playing with a pet
helping others
join a club
after school activiteies
etc. I will try to limit my time on my devices and try to stay under two hours there for doing something efficient (maybe trying to work on my spelling)

I have an app that every day tells me how much time I've used my ipad. I had a very good idea of doing the median, mean and the mode of my time but I've just realized that I left my IPad at school. Look out for another blog post from me later.

I think that people can stop looking at their screens so much by:
1. Playing in their backyard.
2. Going to the library and finding a book about something that person doesn't know about, and reading it.
3. Going to a friends house and playing in his or her's backyard
4. Pick up some trash from the ground.

So now that I have my iPad I have noticed some things. I usually spend 1 hour a day for school days and some I don't even touch my iPad. I have an app named Moment which tracks how much time I've used. This week on Monday I've used 1 hour and the rest of the school days 1 hour and 30 mins. On weekends I use about 3 hours of screen time I usually go out and have to take pictures for my food blog. I added them all together and I got 780 mins a week. (13 hours). My mean is about 2 hours. Other activities I do aside from being on devices are...

Biking
Baking
Cooking
Gardening
Walking your Dog
Drawing
Writing
Playing
Studying (for tests)
Playing my ukulele

I haven't been tracking how much screen time I have been using but my parents always look on the news and stuff and they always have new ideas on how to use screen time but basically I only use screens to watch youtube which can be educational which is normally what I do *wink wink* but I get about 2 and a half hours on a weekday, 30 mins in the morning, 1 hour after school, and 1 hour before I relaaaaaax/sleep. On the weekends I do about 4 hours 2 in the morning 1 hour at 4:00 and 1 hour before I sleep.

5 things you can do instead of screens is:

1. Walk your dog(or cat, or bird, or yourself)

2. Play an instrument until your family yells at you(unless your good)

3. Play soccer, or a sport

4. Swim(summer)

5. Dream about ducks

-Willan the duck... or chicken

Oh and on Sunday we have a no-screen Sunday and I always "forget" it's no screen Sunday. *wink wink*

When I was filling this chart in I realized how much screen time I have been using. I don't think I need to be using this much screens so I will try and not use them that much and spend more time with my family and friends.

This is how much time I spend on my device at home and school on week days.

Sunday
2 hours
Monday
1 hour and a half
Tuesday
4 hours
Wednesday
3 hours
Thursday
4 hours
I spend most of my time in school and afterschool on my computer and ipad. I think this is wayyyyyyyyy too much time looking at a screen do to help not go on it i'm going to take my dog Sam on more walks and when I have play date instead of spending my time on devices i will play outside or go on a bike ride. Another thing I should do is help Afrodita (who is my step mother btw) with cooking at dinner time instead of playing games.

Well lets just say I am not healthy with my screen time so this is way way over the average but some of this screen time is for school and homework and that should not count.we should only try to use our screen time for homework and productive stuff and maybe 30 mins of free time.when you do screen time you can do so many things othere that youtube or tv or anything else.

You can do..

1-there are so many things that you can do other than youtube and more.Like playing outside and enjoy the hot weather and if it’s not hot put a sweatshirt on.Go swimming or go to a park maybe even tuck park if you live a little close.

2-This one may be silly to you but i personly likeit take a nap or go to bed early. I now you like sleeping because well who doesn’t and don’t say I do right now.also I better not hear anyone going to school saying “I’m tired ”

3-just draw or wright witch remines me mr.steltman we should have a box to hand in SMALL storys for the class to read during dear / podcast or just anytime they wan to then have feadback forms to fill out

4-have a walk.
Walking calms some people down maybe turn it into a nature walk that will be even better.observe some plants and trees maybe take a friend or family member.

5-last thing is do something productive with your life like clean your room or wash some dishes. This will help a round your house and you can make shure you have some chores done for the week .

My mean, median, and mode are all 4. I noticed that I am double the time for everyday, but whatever. Let's just get on with the 5 things.

1. We can go outside and play. when you play outside and have fun, time just flies by. So we should go outside and paly with family or a friend, and at the same time you are socializing so you get more fond of your friends and also are active.

2. You can also practice your drawing or writing skills. When you do that, you can show off how good you are at drawing(unlike me) and will get better marks in Art. And if you chose to write, why not write a story, who knows, you may publish it someday.

3. You should already be doing this but, you can do the dishes, or clean your room, or help out with making dinner so you help out mom or dad, and then if oyu wnat to babysit, you can say, i am a pro at cooking and keeping the house clean.

4. You can also try doing come crafts of diys (like making slime), and you might make something really pretty that you can show your friends and say "I made this!"

5. You could maybe play a board game with your family. You may find out that you are really good at it and go into the board game olympics. You would also be with your family and would be spending some valuable time with them.

From Sunday to Tuesday I’ve been on my I pad for 6 hours and 27 minutes. A lot better than I expected because I thought I would be on it for 10 trillion hours, but you see there’s a difference. But you know I can Improve, by what you ask?
By:

Start exercising and playing with my dog because he’s fat. Harsh word right? But second thoughts it’s cute when he’s fat so I might have to think about that.

And sometimes I do like to kick the ball around the fields because I usually feel groovy:)

Another thing I wouldn’t mind doing is helping around the house more. It’s always nice to have a second hand.

Also I would really like to spend time with family. Some company other than an I pad would be really nice.

And my last thing to do off screens is cooking. I’ve really getting into cooking and it’s rewlly fun and mistreating mixing and making food.

I’m going to keep watchching how much time I’m spending on screens because there’s more then a device out there.

Since this week, I could not keep track of my screen time, because I'm always on for short periods of time, but a lot of short periods of time. So I was unable to keep track, so instead, I'm going to say the pro's and cons of using technology in the classroom.

Pro's:
With a lot of the tasks we have in math class, it's how to get the answer and not the actual answer, so it's really helpful to have instant access to calculators.
For any projects, using technology can be a lot more efficient and easy to research the topic.

Con's:
Using technology, since it has instant access to ANYTHING, using tech can be extremely distracting and it is very easy for anyone to get of topic.
I know we are all really good people, but the technology can cause people cheating, because, like I said, tech has instant access to everything, so it's easy to cheat.

I hope this makes up for not being able to keep track of my screen time!

My mean median and mode are: Mean:2.8,Median:3 and the mode was:3

Number 1: The first thing that I would do is I would go for a walk or go for a bike ride because if you are on your screen to long then you might want to take a break and go for a walk or bike ride.

Number 2: The next thing you could do is homework because if you do your homework then you will get a head start.

Number 3: The next thing I will do is I will is I would go outside and play with my dog Shelby I would play with Shelby because she is so fun to play with and I love her

Number 4: The next thing I would do is I would get of my computer and write a story it would be so much fun and if I did make a story then I would read it to people.

Number 5: The last thing I would do is I would sleep in because I know that my brother will wake up at 7 am and he will go on his computer and sometimes I do that so I think that I should start to sleep in

In total this week I have had 8 hours of screen time. Lucky for me I have stayed under the 2 hour screen time rule and I am glad I did. I feel like I could have done something better and more active than looking at a screen. I noticed that I was missing out on real life because all I was doing was looking at a screen. If you want to be healthy and not look at a screen then here is a list of stuff you can do to be active!
1. go play a board game
2. go to the park and play basketball
3. go swimming
4. go play with a friend
5. go on a scooter or bike ride
I hope I can use even less electronics this week!
