Mr. Steltman - Redirecting ...

Look Up ... Who knows what you might be missing!

2/11/2016

Watch the above video (please excuse the one curse word but the video was too good not to share, and I’m sure you’re mature enough to deal with it).  I found the story that the man told so powerful.  I had tears in my eyes at certain parts (especially the parts where they have a new baby).   With the story that is told in the video, the poet also offers a very clear message about technology and how “social media” is making us less social.  I really liked the idea in this message as I’ve been noticing at home, with Vera, that even when she watches tv, she does so with a pretend cell phone in her hand and is looking at it.  As cute as it is, it’s also very scary to me because she’s copying MY behaviour and if this is what I’m showing to her, then I’m missing out on opportunities to be in the moment with her and my family.   This video has inspired me to try and put my phone away when I get home from school and only check it 3 times during the night.  I hope that this allows me to be more in the moment and not miss out on great opportunities with my family.
For you blog post this week, I’d just like you to post a reflection on the video.  What did you think of it? How did it make you feel? What thoughts do you have now that you’ve seen it?  Does it inspire you to do anything now that you’ve seen it?
Do you think we spend too much time on our devices?  What ways do you think we could lessen our dependence on these devices?  How can we find more ways to truly "connect" with each other?

For your writing you can answer, some or all of the questions or add your own ideas.  I think it’s really important that we watch this video and think about what it's trying to teach us.

When I was watching this video, I felt sad but knew that it would actually happen. Everyone these days have phones everywhere. The video made me feel awful because when I am with my friends I have to admit either my friend, me or both of us are on the internet we are losing time to do something we have never done before.

In my experience, I've been with my friends while they ignore me and use their electronic. I feel horrible when that happens because I am wasting time doing something that I really don't want to do...

This video inspired me to get of my electronic and do something that I have never done before. For example, in summer 2015 I was scared to leave home and go to a sleepover for 3 weeks not seeing my family. But at the end of camp, I had the best time ever and done things that I have never done before. It feels nice to do something that I have never done before and not looking at a screen and blocking out the world around me. I had no way to electronics for three weeks and I got throug it. I was still talking to my family by mailing and writing what I did each day!

Each day when my parents are around and free, I block them out and use my electronics. I know that is horrible and rude, I had a opportunitie to be with my family instead I chose my electronics over them. And watching this video made me think about what my family and I could have done. We could have got to know each other more.

I watched this video before but it brings to tears every time. I thought that this video sent out a really strong message because in the world that we live in now the world that little 4 to 12 year olds are growing in is so blind at looking at the world as it is but we are absolute experts at knowing how to play a game on a phone and we are so good at typing but what about writing. This video made me feel really sad because if you look around wait this is a perfect example... What are you on doing your Homework right now. SEE this is exactly what I mean. It make me sad because if you looked at most of the parts in the video you can see the 2 siblings or the little kid hiding behind the couch playing on his IPAD but that isn't the worst part at the end you can see that the little kid is getting stuck on an game when he could be outside. All of the stuff in the video represents our World right now for example if you go on an app or game you can see who's playing you can see that people from literally all over the world are playing.

Now that I have watched the video all I can think is " I'm not gonna waste my time on my computer starting tomorrow" but honestly is that really true I tell myself that EVERY SINGLE day but that obviously NEVER happens. I'm thinking about what every single one of us will turn out like when we are adults are we gonna sit there like lazy people or are we gonna be the BESt people ever and be active and have great Jobs.

This video inspired me too have a day for every single month where I put down my technology and just spend time with my family. This inspired me too look forward to the future I know this sounds weird but it's true. This inspired me too look forward to the future because who know what the future is like maybe it has way more tech where the only thing people do is go on technology or the future is the complete opposite of the world today. This also inspired me to focus on my family more but mainly my cousins and my parents because when my parents tell me to do something like to take out the trash and I reply by saying " Ok 1 minute" which then turns into 1 night and I forget to do it.

Who know's what it's like to spend a day without technology because I don't. Sometimes we get so lost in the moment that we forget our surroundings. Oh sorry that came out wrong I meant to say sometimes we get to caught up in our Youtube video that we don't look at our surroundings. Sometimes technology can be good but other times it's bad. Technology is Technology and we can't do anything about it or Can we? That's my opinion what's your's.

When I first watched the video, I was amazed. When the man first started to talk,I knew that this video is right for us. so that means to get of your phone and maybe:Go to the park with your friends, Go to the movies with your friends, or even asked your parents to invite your cousins or grandparents or even your Aunt and Uncle. And maybe when they come over, don't go on your phone at ALLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!
Don't be anty social, be social.

During the video I had a mix of feelings, I was sad because I knew this was happening and I was happy that all of the things that you don't do on your phone can change your life! Phones and iPad's and all of the devices are getting smarter and better and that brings people to it. They spend almost all day on it and don't have a chance to open up to anything else that's better than that.

Sometimes phones are good to have like for emergencies and stuff like that but to be on it all day that can change your life. If you don't really need it don't use it. Call your friends over and play a game (not on the devices).

More and more people are getting devices and that isn't going to be good. There is stuff on the phones that keep bringing and bringing people to it. It gets addicting but sometimes just stop for the day.

This is a problem I knew a little bit about. I never really thought of what you would miss out of but now I know it's super important. I try to limit myself for an hour a day, and I don't really use it in Florida that much because I'm with my family going to the beach and golfing. Everyone try to be on your devices less than you are, just think of what opportunities you might miss when you are on your device.

After watching this video I became quite aware of how our world is changing. Back in the day everyone would be outside playing until they got called in for dinner. Now its completely different. Everyone is on there iPads and iPods instead of playing outside. Instead of going to each others houses we text. Instead of talking with their family we all are playing Flappy bird,Subway surfers, Minecarft etc.

I personally think we are all way to caught up in our devices that we have actually no idea what's going on around us. A way we can not be on our devices as much is to limit yourself to one hour a day. Once you do that you will realize how wonderful world is!

I have a challenge for you.... Since family day is coming up I challenge you to not use your device. Or at least only use it for 1 hour. Use your day off to spend it with your family!

This video was a big eye opener for me, as just before typing this I was on Netflix for like 2 hours. It made me feel sad that humans are depending on technology for almost everything, and it just keeps evolving.

When you are on your phone or device for too long, take a break and look at the world around you, what you could be doing.
I am guilty of going on the internet for hours and hours, but I would like to change. I think that we should challenge or schedule are selves for our electronic use. The younger generation needs to know that there is more than just images on a screen. There's a whole world of things just as fun as watching Youtube.

Although, I'm not saying technology is all bad, there is lot's of times where it can be very helpful-and I'm not going to lie, I'm kinda addicted. But we should limit ourselves and not use it to fill up our free time.

Whenever I wake up and check on my brother, I always find him watching youtube on his phone like a zombie. I assume he woke up early and immediately grabbed his phone. He get's so cranky! When I try to confiscate his phone he yells at me, with dark circles under his eyes. It also effects him after. When I tell him to set the table for breakfast, he just stares at me blankly. When I talked to my parents about it, we agreed to limit him to 1 hour on his phone a day.`

This is an example of how staring at a screen can effect your attitude and mind.A goal for me is to take time to put my phone away and try something new. And if I ever forget, I can watch the video again!

This is what I think of this video and what we can do to prevent the world from turning into zombies.

What did I think of it?
I thought that we should not spend almost 6 hours on our devices everyday when we can just go outside and play with our friends. Technology is good for communicating with friends, but too much time on devices can be bad for your mind and body.

How did it make me feel?
It made me feel that I should be very careful when I am on my device because it can change my future. It’s important for us to not always be on our device when you can go outside and play with your friends. I feel worried because if I spend all my time playing on my device I wont get good marks on my report card and if I don’t get good marks I wont get a really good job when I am older.

Do I think we spend too much time on our devices?
Yes I think that we spend too much time on our devices because we don't just spend time on our devices at home or outside the house but at school too which can distract the students to not doing their work. (EX. When my mom finds my brother playing on his iPad she will take away his iPad away for 3 days).

I think it will motivate people to get off their devices and go outside. Yes, I think we spend too much time on our devices. It can hurt our eyes and effect what happens in the future for our life. We could change that by putting a certain time limit on our devices for each day of the week. We can find more ways to connect by sending emails on paper, getting together, having family time and going outside.

This video is very sad because it is true because a lot of people are on their phones too much that is why I am doing a short blog post this week. I think this video is very true and it makes a point . There is one thing I don't understand why would we watch this video and right now i'm typing on a CHROME BOOK. So that video has encouraged me to end this blog post right now. Thanks for listening. #Don't swear.

I think this video is very inspiring because it shows that technology doesn’t help you make friends or play with you outside. It’s just a means of research and that’s all it should be used for. I understand that you want to see the latest episode on a series or a game you like. If you only do this through your life you will wind up alone with no friends, wife or husband or kids. I think social networking isn’t social at all because it usually involves sitting down by yourself looking at a screen instead of talking to someone face to face. I saw a lot of myself in this video and I think I need to set some boundaries on the amount of time I spend on my phone and tablets. I’m going to set a timer for my internet and technology usage because without boundaries we could get lost for hours in a day. So stop reading this and Mr. Steltman take us outside!!

I think the video is really inspiring because its makes you want to get off your phone and any devices and go outside to play and have fun instead of staying inside all day when you can go outside and play with friends or go for walks that's what I think of the video.

This video was really inspiring. The man in it was smart enough to go out there and give the whole world a message. If I think back there are a lot of times where I am missing out on important opportunities by spending to much time on electronics. This video has made me think that nobody should have even invented technology. I bet you that if you go out on the street right no, at least a quarter of the people will be on technology. I know that it is sad, but you can't change the whole world. Many people have been trying to stop going on technology but it is actually harder than you think. They make it so that there are so many addictive games and apps that you just never want to stop. If you try to you will end up telling yourself "Okay, I'm just going on it for a bit. Just to check." It has happened to me before to and I just couldn't. People with Instagram or Facebook and anything like that will most likely not stop going on electronics. If you ever have guests over and the first thing they say is "Whats your WiFi?" Than you know that you have a problem right away. People who are always talking about social media are the people that are so bad with stopping there selves on using electronics that it is basically their whole life. Creators of apps just want to make sure that everybody gets their app and keeps it for a very long time. App and video game creators don't really care if kids get addicted to their games, in there minds it is better if kids are addicted. Almost everybody goes on electronics, even the guy who made the video probably had to use a lot of electronics to make that video. Whenever I see my cousins, everybody is on electronics and it is impossible to get them off of them. After some hard trying it is possible. We usually play a game like hide and go seek. But even in hide and go seek my cousins use electronics. One time I was it and I started counting. I looked downstairs and saw nobody. I got my flashlight and started looking harder. I finally gave up, just as my brother made a group chat with me him and my two cousins. I told therm I give up. They said no. After an hour they said that they played on there i pods and they where all in the same spot, except for my cousin who fell asleep. It was really painful. They said that they where to tired to play another round. I tried to convince them to play but they didn't want to. I convinced one of my cousins to. Video games ware out your energy and make you tired. After you play for too long you will not feel like moving your body at all. You will have to stretch until you are back to normal. If you are lucky than you won't get a headache, but you most likely will. There isn't really any way to get rid of a headache from video games so you will have to wait. Video games weaken your brain and you will not act the same as you usually do. If you play too much than you will get addicted. I try not to but it is hard, so I play outside until I am tired than I go back inside and get more energy. After that I play video games. It isn't very healthy to play video games, although they are fun. I am sure you guys are tired of listening to me so good bye.

Watching this video made me think of a few thing that I have done and the world has done...

People are so busy looking at there phones and are not playing outside any more. Now you see kids that are 5 have iPad or phones and they are so focuses on that they don't play outside.

I am always closing my door and I feel like I don't spend as much time as I would like to with my brothers. I feel like if 3 times a week I should go play with him outside or play a broad game with him. I think that this will help me not go on my iPad so much and to play with hike more. On family day weekend I went skiing in the US with my cousins we didn't have WiFi or cell serves. We had too play board games and watch old movies. We had only a few games that we could play on our iPad but we talked and went skiing and snowboarding. I learned a lot of things that weekend 1 that snowboarding is a lot harder then it looks and 2 that you don't just need WiFi.

If your parents lived without WiFi then so can you!

I think that this video is inspiring and probably brought most of us to tears, it makes you think about your life and others around you. It is one video that I have seen that really tells you to PUT DOWN THAT DARN TECHNOLOGY!!!!! It is one out of a lot of people that actually look up and notice the world around them! The world is full of chances and if you look up from your phone you would see the life ahead of you!

When we were young we were outside. Now we are a part of these inventions. This makes me feel different.Because when I was young I played non stop.
Technology is now an obsession. I know this because I was a victim of this obsession.I also am having a hard time stopping. We all need to interact. So now after watching this video all I want to do is act like a child and play outside.I also want everyone to play and enjoy the fun because you can only get a few moments when you are happy sometimes.
This is what I think about this video.I also have 2 goals i want to achieve.1:Leave this technology and be social.2:Limit my technology time.Thank you for listening.

Watching this video made me realize that you don't need phones to live life! If you have people to socialize with or play with then that's all you really need. I remember when I was young and I would always love to go play outside the whole day and let my creativity take away! but now since Ipads, laptops and phones where invented we aren't creative and socialized any more. I am a person who hates when people don't give eye contact epically when they are on there phones. I just find that pretty rude and I will straight away know that they are addicted! We have to start thinking about what's happening around us, Not what's happening on our phones! This video made me feel very inspired and sad because so many people these days are on there phones. So Stop waiting your time on your phone and go play outside!

When I was watching this video, It felt powerful because it is true that everyone does that they just look down on there phone. In the video it said that if you are the best dad in the world it doesn't count if you have to give the kid a I pad instead of them playing outside in the fresh air. You don't need a phone because in the video if the guy didn't look up he wouldn't find the girl and do all of the stuff he did and get married he would be a loner.

With i pad and phones they are good to have but after two days of talking about how awesome their phone is then they start snap chatting people until 9pm because they take 1 million pictures then they send it to a friend then they send a snapchat back and that happens all day or they go on to instgram and then they take a picture and wait a long time on there phone till they bet they record on like. JUST LOOK UP FROM YOUR PHONE!!!!!! Go outside and play do something fun or even do sport like hockey, volleyball and even cheerleadering.

FIVE THING WHY YOU SHOULD LOOK UP YA!!
1. Bad for your health
2. get in shape
3.Meet the friend in person that you where talking to
4. Have dinner with a family
5GO on a family trip

I felt very sad about the video, and it almost made me flood a city with tears. I'm not kidding :'(. When I grow up, I will not text, and I will spend less time on my electronics and spend more time with my family. Also, even though I love electronics, I would still spend time with my friends too.

I thought this video was great because it was giving us a strong message and it taught us all a lesson. This video made me feel like I am the laziest creature ever. Now that I have seen this video I am TRYING to not play on any technology for to long. I limit myself to 1 hour a day when I am at home. This video inspired me to do new stuff and in my life that means to do anything BUT play on technology.

I think I spent way too much time on technology and I should limit myself that's why I have a 1 hour rule. Instead of being on technology all day we can play outside or do any other activities.

Those are my feelings about technology but to be honest I love technology and there is no way to stop me from using it!

After watching this inspiring video of how technology is ruining our social life it made me remember a few weeks ago on Sunday... my street had a power outage for 3 hours and yet I couldn’t even last a minute without WiFi. Now that I look back on this experience I feel silly because my life shouldn’t be focused on technology all the time it should be focused on more important things such as fully getting my carving edge on my ski’s or going tobogganing with my friends. when your going tobogganing with your friends or doing anything with anyone you’ll realize how fun it is to actually interact with them physically.

Technology is good for some reasons but bad for lots of other reasons. It affect us in many different ways like,
We use it for gaming.
And we use it to call are friends that is our neighbor that is right beside are house.
I mostly use my phone for playing games and texting a lot ex, my friends in South Africa.
DONT READ THIS BLOG POST!!!!!!!
I thought of this video that I should stop going on my phone all the time and stop playing games for 2 hours non stop. It is not good for my health and I should be outside more Instead of exercising inside I should do it outside In Summer when it is not cold.

For this weeks blog post we watched a video about people being on their phone way to much and so this is what I did for this weeks blog post

How I felt While watching the Video
---------------------------------------------------
When I watched the video about people being on their phone to much it inspired me to go outside more and be more active and spend less time on social media or whatever you do because I also feel like the guy did in the video I felt like I was also guilty of doing this multiple times and I never liked doing it when I did it it's just once you get on your device you lose track of time and I end up going on it for too long, and I want to change my when I do it and their is a simple way to stop losing track of time and going on for to long and that way is by if you don't go on your device at all you wont end up over using it and I also feel like everyone in this room or in fact in this whole school or even everyone in Oakville is guilty of doing this multiple times.

What I Think Of The Video Now That I Have Seen It
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
What I Think of the video now that I have seen it is that I think that the video was really inspiring and they did really well on trying to make a point about people being on their phones to much and they presented it in a really cool way

Lucas

I would just like to start of this blog post like the kid in the Honest Truth says a lot, people are missing out in a lot of stuff and activities and chances to socialize and create more friends with other people because of that they are so addicted to their mobile devices and that's the truth. I think that the video has a very strong message and is very informative and is telling us that we need to get out their and be more active and make more friends and I don't mean those people that you call "friends" on Facebook or Instagram or any other type of social media ya I'm talking about those friends the ones that you have never met before and really you don't know what they look and who they really are, as the video says at the very beginning " I have four hundred and twenty two friend yes I am very lonely , I speak to each of them every day , yet none of them really know me" that clearly states that that person is to caught up in electronics and social media and he has lots of friends but not the type of friend that you think of when you hear the word friend the one that you met on social media and you talk to them everyday but for what you really know they could be a person that is the opposite of what you think whether that be good or bad but my point is that when you are caught up in trying to beat a high score in a game or texting your friends you miss out in lots and lots of opportunities. People all over the world do this , when they are on their phones that is the only thing that they pay attention to for example maybe a person is walking down the street and he is only paying attention to his phone maybe a person is also walking down the street and they bump into each other and they both fall and hurt themselves really bad. What do you think would of happened if they both or one of the wasn't paying attention to their phone, do you think they would of bumped into each other I don't think so.

This video made me fell sad and that people aren't paying attention to all the wonderful things in life because the only thing that they think is wonderful right know is their phones and iPad's and iPod's (well it might not be the only thing , but anyway) I know this is a bit much and I might be over exaggerating but when I watched that video and saw those people who couldn't stop starring at their phones it kind of made me want electronics to not exist. Well that might be a bit much so it made we want electronics to only be used when you need it. I have multiple reasons for that but one of them being that people wont be missing out in as much stuff as they would when they are starring at their phones. What I mean by that is well let me give you an example form that video. When you see those two girls on their phones at the bus stop and then another girl comes those two other girls are to focused on their phones they didn't even say hi or anything to the other girl and you can tell by the girls reaction she fells sad and alone. Who knows maybe if those two girls were not looking at their phones maybe those three could become best friends and could have a happy friendship just because they weren't on the

I have experienced lots of times when everybody around me was to busy typing away at their phones to even notice me and I was just sitting around doing nothing and I am one of those people that get bored really easy and trust me just sitting their and doing nothing is painful for me because I like to have something to do . Let me give you an example , ok one time last year we were going somewhere and we needed to take the bus and for some reason their were lots of people their at that bus stop and I remember EVERY SINGLE PERSON that wasn't in my family was on their phone!!!!!!!! it was just crazy to see how much people have got addicted to electronics it just made me fell that people are missing out in opportunities and also they are just becoming less social and that isn't a good thing. I remember I even said hi to a person but all they did was give me a glare and just went back to looking at his phone , and who knows maybe me and that person could of became best friends ( he was 20 years older than me but that doesn't matter)

And I know that electronics are addicting ad you can get addicted to it very easily but we have to infer that if we keep on going on our devices and do nothing else nothing good will come out of that. Know I cant exactly that I don't go on electronics often , Because I do well maybe not all the time and I'm sure nobody else go's on electronics all the time, but I do go on electronics. I go on them everyday mostly and that isn't something that I am proud of but I am trying to limit myself to how much I go on electronics each day and that is what people should try to do , I am not saying that you can't go on your phone or whatever device you have I am just saying that it isn't to good when you get addicted you just have to try and limit yourself

Here are the reasons that I think w

After watching this video I remember sometimes I want to talk to my mom but she is too busy looking at her phone.

This video inspired me that I should not waste my time on the computer and not do my homework. Also I am going to tell my parent to look up!!

I think we spend too much time on our devices because we talk to friends om it, we play games on it, we buy staff on it, even we go to the washroom with it!!

I have 2 ways to help people to truly " connect" with each other:
1. We can set a rule: not looking at your phone when you are eating or talking.
2. We can play some card game with friends and not video games.

Here are the reasons why I think we should look up from our phones

1. the first reason why I think we should look up from our phones is because It isn't exactly healthy for you to lie around on the couch all day.
What do you think is better for your body and just yourself in general number 1 : sitting on the coach seeing how much people liked you Instagram post or Option 2 : going outside and enjoying the fresh air and maybe playing a game of soccer or doing something active if you chose option 1 think again because if you lay around all day checking your post will you stay fit that way I don't think so.

2. The second reason I think we should look up from our phones is because what I have repeatedly said throughout this post is that we miss out on opportunities to make friends and to be active. Here is another example , this is about the honest truth , ok on the bus when Mark meets the little girl what do you think would of happened if the little girl asked mark a question and mark was to distracted by his phone to even notice her , do you think that they would begin talking and do you think that , that little girl would almost bring joy to mark if he was on his phone , I don't think so.

Here are ways we can help people look up from their phones

1 The firs way to help people look up from their phones is to spread the word about what is happening. What I mean by this is to spread the word to people that people all over the world are missing out on opportunities to make more friends and are not staying fit just because they are to distracted by their phones. Hopefully that will get people to understand that it is very bad if you get addicted to electronics and they will understand that they need to go outside and be active.

2. the second way I think we can help people loo up from their phones is limit your self to how much electronics you go on ad to try and tell people that they should try and limit their self to how much electronics they use. What I mean by this is I know it might be tough but try and limit your self to how much electronics you use and try and when you are going to go use electronics think to yourself what else could you do instead of checking social media. You could go outside and play in the snow or you could play in your house just try to stay active.

Think about those people in the olden days who survived and lived a happy, well maybe happy life and they had no electronics that means no phones, no ipads, no iPod's, no computers, and even no internet because they ha no electricity , just think about what it would be like to live like that I know it crazy no internet!!!!! But not every electronic device is bad I'm talking about those ones that we use at school ya they aren't bad they are used to teach us. But I am talking about those electronics that are used for entertainment and amusement ya we need to limit the use of those ones. Just remember to look up once in a while.
