Learning through Failure

11/3/2016

Picture
This week, we looked at our learning skills and took some time to be very reflective of our own learning so far this semester.  For this week I want you to continue to be reflective on your learning, and your personality and to think about failure.  Failure isn’t fun, it never feels good, and sometimes it can be downright embarrassing!  The crazy thing about it though, is that it’s through failure that we do our biggest amounts of growing as students, as learners, and as people.  In your blog post this week, I want you to think back on this past month, week, year, etc. and write down 3 times that you failed or weren’t successful on something you tried.  Write down what happened, why you feel that you failed and what you learned from this failure.
My example for this week:
One of this biggest learning times I have ever experienced is when I was in teacher’s college.  I had a class of grade 6’s and I was teaching them about finding volume of triangular prism.  I had the vice principal in the class watching and I TAUGHT IT TO THEM WRONG! I got confused with the numbers and the vice-principal had to come up and help me with the lesson.  What I learned from that failure was that: 1. preparation is key when teaching any lesson  and  2. Mistakes happen and you have to be able to accept that as a teacher.

One of this biggest learning times I have ever experienced is when I didn't listen to my dad on how to ride a bike on 2 wheels [ 5 yrs ago ] I just pushed on the pedal, my foot slipped of the foothold, went in front of the tire and I shredded of some of my skin and blood gushed out as my bike fell on me. What I learned was that I should have listened to him and THAT IS TOTALLY THE WRONG WAY TO RIDE A BIKE.

P.S DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS

One of the biggest times i have ever failed was in gymnastics, i was doing a skill the night before the first day of school and i wasent really focusing too much, my coach was in a bad mood and told my partner to just push anyways and we both fell and my lip went into her forehead and split open. It was bleeding so much and at first my coach was mad but then he understood. We asked about if sticthes would be good but my dad said he doesnt think i need it. Its still a but swelled and the bump will be there for ever. I was really scared to do it until about a month ago. So what i learned was
1: I should be ready for anything like that to go wrong
2: dont do gymnastics LOL
3: i should focus more

1) I sat on the couch with a small cardboard box in my hands. I was furiously wrapping coils and coils of copper wire across the fragile frame. The pen I had thrust through the coil dug into my knees as the spool went round and round as I wrapped yet more wire. "697, 698, 699, 700!" I cried out in triumph. I brought the unfinished generator to the dining room table, and inserted the screw and colorful magnets into place. I wound the minuscule light bulb through the wire, the sharp ends cutting into my fingers. I spun the screw around as fast as I could, hoping the light bulb would finally, finally light. I screamed in frustration because, despite the hours I'd spent working and the 700 coils of wire, the light bulb refused to light.
This was the failure of my AC electric magnetic generator. It was an extra credit school project that I'd spent days and days on with my Dad. In the end, we replaced the magnets and it worked. But it was so frustrating I almost cried. This experience taught me to work hard, persevere, and to be patient.

2) I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I placed one foot in front of the other in my preparatory position. I lifted up and spun into a half turn. My foot swiveled out in front of me. As I turn back to the front, my leg came out to the side. So far so good. I pulled myself back around, forcing my foot back into the swivel. But, I lost my balance and fell backwards onto my back. I heard several muffled giggles from the older kids watching me from the front of my studio. My head hung as I walked toward them to see the next group try.
This was the time when I working on my pump turns. Almost everyone had mastered it but me. It was really embarrassing. But when, I really focused, and gave it my all, I could do better and gradually, I succeeded.

3) I winced in pain as the needle pierced the skin on my left index finger. I blew a cool gust of air on the small cut and went back to work. I watched as the line of thin white thread snaked through the fabric as I started to pull the stitch closed. Suddenly, I felt a sharp tug on the end of the thread. I examined the inside of the stitch and noticed a large knot. I threw back my head and sighed. I'd have to cut the thread and start the project over again.
This failure was the time I first learned how to sew. It was so hard at first. So, I asked my aunt for help. She's an excellent sewer. With her guidance, I became so much better at sewing.

1) My mistake was at Trampoline. I was practicing my double back roller front flip. It is one of the hardest moves and I FINALLY got it. But the only person that saw was my friend Sara, we told my coach and he wanted to see. So I did it again but my legs moved from the x potion and crossed over the wrong way which caused me to tumble over the side! My coach said "FELICITY ARE YOU OKAY!!!" I jumped up saying I'm fine my coach then said "Keep trying". Than the next day I GOT IT.

The things I learned are

1) That if you make an escape it helps you learn
2)I learned how to break properly
3)I learned how too do a really hard trick.

One of this biggest learning times I have ever experienced is when I in China I feel my math is good.So I don't listen even thing about math.So at one math test,my grade is last one.The grade remind I need study hard about math.
The things I learned are
1.you need constantly study.
2.you can't feel you number 1.

1) I was in kindergarten and we were doing an assignment in partners everyone was fine with their partners except me I was with a jerky kid I didn't like and I liked everyone!! but I was fine with him and I didn't really care. I did clock if you don't know what that is you basically just move you're eyes in a clockwise position and move them just far enough so it's not rolling your eyes(Rude).Anyway I did clock eyes and my teacher saw me and thought I rolled my eyes at her and she put me in the timeout corner!! I learned that you should never be rude or anything that looks rude. I also learned to always be okay with what I get(candy attitude ETC.).

1. One of my biggest fails is once when I was playing hockey, I was chasing down somebody on the defensive end, and I stole the puck and then ran right into the goalpost. I was very dizzy and then had to sit out. 2.Another pretty big fail was again I was chasing down a guy in the defensive zone in hockey, I tripped him and slashed until he fell over, and then he ran into my goalie. The fail was that I still had the balls to fight him after. 3. This one luckily doesn't include hockey. Me and Hudson where playing soccer in the garage, and I kicked the ball at his nuts, and then the ball had hit the sprinkler. Well, not necessarily the sprinkler, but the part that you twist to turn on the hose. And then the hose started to blast like crazy. It wouldn't stop and when we went over to it to stop it, we twisted it and it blew up. Literally splashed everywhere. We where both soaked. But the worst part is that the sprinkler was still going. I immediately said, if this doesn't stop and it floods our garage, you are paying. So we both decided to go inside and dry off. We didn't tell my parents that it was on until about 30 minutes later, but when they opened the garage to see, there was about half a ruler of water in height flooding out the garage. It must've stopped by itself. But I am sure that we both remember how scared we where to see the reaction.

I stood up at the front of my class holding a book in my hands. As words changed from thoughts in my head to words I was glad I didn't mess up yet. Then... I read old woman and suddenly those thoughts crumbled. "UM!! don't you mean young man!" exclaimed a voice from the back of my class. My teacher said she will start reading and that just twisted the dagger more. I leaned to always pay close attention when I'm doing anything.

One time when I was learning how to skate, I was doing well and I just had a bit left to do. BOOM! I fell, slid into the teacher and 2 other people. All four of us sat on the ice, my face was priceless. I could swear every single person turned to look at me. That day I left never wanting to skate again (kids overreact.) I learned to never give up and that helps A LOT.

This one is less of a failure and more of a immune system breakdown but I felt the same feelings so I decided not to leave it out.Christmas eve last year i was at my friends house and I took a bite of a cookie and my mouth an throat went dry and itchy. At the time i did not know I had allergies. I went home with a horrible full body rash. My entire family was at my house and I felt horrible because my family had to take care of me and everyone downstairs AND the turkey in the oven. When I went downstairs when I was being hugged by family they were touching my rash even though they had no idea and it was horrible. It finally subsided and I was SO glad. I felt bad that my family had another thing on their plate and that my family felt like they were hurting me.

One of the things that I learned from my failures is to never give up here are a few examples of what happened:

I love sports so I wanted to try out for the teams that I liked but I never make the team. :-( But I will keep on trying ! :-}

I love to ride my bike. one day at Hilton Falls when I was 9 we were going bike riding with some of my friends. Then we asked a dad and his teenager which path that they preferred that was easy then we went on the path that they recommended it was pretty bumpy but we got past it and then there was a giant Hill. I had this little red bike and you had to Pedal backwards to stop it . I went down the hill and because it was really Rocky and bumpy I fell off and hurt my with my elbows and it really hurt.

I learned from fall and so I will never give up.

In class one day I tried to draw a triangle that had to have the area of 11 cm2. I was sitting at my desk with my table group drawing the triangle but each time it was wrong. It took me a few attempts to draw the triangle right. I was so mad that I could not draw a very easy shape and my table group saw that I was drawing it wrong. I have learned from this that it is okay to ask a friend how to do something .

During hockey practice I had got a very good pass and I tried to hit a one timer and missed the puck completely. I was very embarrassed because the pass was perfect. Now when I receive a pass I get control of the puck and then I shoot.

While I was playing Minecraft online a few weeks ago, it was my turn to rebuild a structure that was randomly chosen for me. The structure was a Jack'o lantern. My team and I saw the structure from every perspective and then I started building. I had built the structure, then my team and I saw that I had built the structure off by a block. Because this happened my team lost and I had failed in front of 59 people. Now I know that I have to work faster and more efficiently while building in Minecraft.

1) I tried to skate and failed, but I never stopped and tried and got it.
2) I tried to do some parkour by running up a wall and failed painfully and horribly. When I tried I broke my nose. This was in the summer. It was really painful and my nose was bleeding because I hit my face on the wall. But I still tried and did it, but I can't do it anymore.
3)I tried the try not to laugh challenge and failed because it was so funny. I tried several time and still failed. Then my sister showed me something scary and when I tried I succeeded because I was scared for life.
These are the things I failed at then succeeded.

I remember when I was four skating for my first time ever. When I got onto the ice I fell and said "I can never do this". But I got up any way and tried again I fell in the first few seconds and almost gave up. I said to myself " I am not going inside until I can do this". As I got up all the thoughts of negativity rushing through my head, I shook them away and got up. I managed to stay up for 26 minutes before losing control and face planting into a snow pile bigger than me.

That day I learned that no matter what you think you cant do, your wrong. You can do what you choose. I chose never to give up and keep trying no matter what.

When I was ten I got a toy helicopter for Christmas. I was over joyed, when I went out side to play with it I could not control it it fell onto the driveway. I ran over to it and kicked it as hard a I could sending it flying (pun intended) onto the road. I walked over to it and picked it up and brought it inside the whole cover cam of and the propeller was in pieces. I had it repaired in 1 hour. But that day I learned that even if something does not work don't over react. Count to ten and decide if this is a good choice.

As I entered the Burlington community center and saw all the kids ready for the international teakwondo champion I was amazed by the mass of people. We picked our way through the hundreds of people and finally entered the gym. Our coach calling me over to out mat. One hour later my group was finally called to go against 6 other dojos there where only two of us that where allowed to come in because of our belt level Me and a guy named Even. I first did sparring for the first match. As the buzzer rang the guy I was competing against closed in and kicked, punch left, punch right, kick to the nuts. He got one hit in. Then I attacked him with a punch, jumping kick to face, punch to face turning kick to face. On the last move from the impact he spat out his mouth piece from impact. The judge called time for the guys to put mouth piece in. I kicked him to the stomach making him double over then I did a downward kick and he fell to the floor. I won. Match two, The guy I was versing was a small fat kid. barley up to my chest. We bowed and started, I jump kicked him in the face pushing him out of the square and as he got back in he barraged me with a variety of moves got me to back out of the ring. I stepped back in and side stepped to avoid the kick. I blocked his kicked punching against his leg pushing him off balance. I kicked him and he fell. I won. The finals the ref announced. The guy I was going against was tall and skinny. The buzzer rang and the match began. I side kicked him and he deflected it perfectly with no effort. I full on attacked and kicked until he relented I got six hits in on his chest, nuts and face. He kicked me hard in the stomach I doubled over in pain. The ref called time. I shook the tears away. He punched me in the face knocking me over. There was still 10 seconds left I can get him. I got up and side kick, punch, punch, kick, body slam. The score was even it was a tie. The final decision maker gave the other guys the win. I had lost. As they were giving out medals I hear other people names being called no one was clapping. I started to clap. The ref said good sportsman ship. That day I learned no matter how hurt or angry you are always be nice to people even if you lost and they are better than you.

Number:1!) i was on my laptop, and i was trying to start it up. i wasn't wearing my glasses, and my eyes hadn't adjusted to the light. i was sitting with my family, and things got awkward, when i realised i was pressing every other button EXCEPT for the start button. wow, rumaysa. wow.

number:2!) every single music class, i am flipping terrible at the fingering for the flute. i cant switch to the next hole in time, buuuut im still trying my hardest! (why cant the flute be easier, and less holey?!)

number:3!) i was at the park, using the swing as i always do, and i made an utter failure. i was trying to stand on the swing, and i misplaced my feet. i tried to fix them, but as i was doing it, a little kid ran past and made the swing... well, swing. and then i face-planted. good thing my glasses didn't break!

1)pay more attention!
2)keep trying!
3)dont stand on a swing wrong when little childs are around.

My message is that listening to people is important. At some point, people didn't concentrate for variety reasons. And, learning through failure is good. I know we all want to be successful at something. Although, I won't want to mention lot of things here. So, there's my top 3 failures. I forgot I have a quote: “Mistakes are the best! So, don’t cry in the corner.”

Skating or slipping. As I entered the skating arena, I watched people skating and it wasn't that tough as I thought. The music and people's skate cutting the ice echoed into my ears. I felt fearful when I putted my left foot on the ice. I suddenly slipped, and grabbed onto the cone. At that moment, I watched the professionals skating on the ice and, I was flabbergasted. Basically, I tried many times to stand on the ice. Suddenly, I did it! That replaced me with delightfulness. I skated on the ice and I was drifting to both sides. I then drifted to the left and I crashed! "BOOOOM!"

Outrageous savage. As I joined Minecraft, I clicked the mouse and it broke. However, it wasn't fully finished, so I played Minecraft. When Hudson told me a server called (Mineplex,) I was interested. He told me the server address is www.mineplex.com. I typed it in and joined. My name popped up, "welcome to Mineplex!" I was very shy, seeing people typing. But, they were pretty convivial. I went to play some kind of mini games and my first choice was skywars. I didn't understand which everything seemed very weird. The game was soon to begin. A few minutes later, "First person has been killed!" It was me and I was raging. I played another 5 games which I lost. I was still getting used to it still I lost. I raged so hard and yelled "I HATE THIS GAME!" Literally, everyone heard me in this house. Now, I played another game, I was trying so hard, the last kill was when I 360 with a bow which I knocked him out into the void. I won! I was so pleased. My heart then again filled with joyfulness. In my opinion, it had been the best day ever!

Aggressive sportsmanship. We sometimes feel very furious when the loose fills up your rage chili whatever is it. - (I got the rage chili from Epic Angry Birds.) When I was playing multiplayer servers such as Hive, I was feeling impressed. In team skygiants, I lost and I was better than everyone. - (I wasn’t typically being rude by saying that I was better.) I knew exactly what to do but, suddenly, our zombie giant got destroyed. Also, skygiants is a minigame in a multiplayer server called Hive. So, my teammates weren’t collaborating which I putted the blame on them. The anger got into my nervous which, I felt like outrageously stabbing everyone in Minecraft pvp with a diamond sword. As I putted the blame on them, they left to play another round. When I went to lobby, my anger settled down. I realized that game is just for entertainment. So, I normally respected people.

Everyone have failure. Most importantly, learning through failure is the best choice. These were only three failures. I got a quote: “You should feel the powers in your hand. Never use them on people.” Here I have to end it. By the way, just to say that this is a recount.

1) My pencil scratched hard against the paper. The words were spinning fast in my head. I glanced around the room, most of the students have they're heads down, working, there was also people whispering, it was a bright day, but also a cheerful day. I thought as my head dropped down and started writing again. Studying for the whole week, doing extra homework, and everything I prepared for this final test, I felt confident. I wrote down my answers in the space provided, and looked at the clock, twenty more minutes. I wrote down my last words and started to check. After a short time, "Pencils down." Ordered the teacher, as she put on her rounded glasses and walked around to collect the sheets. Days and days passed, it was the day for the result to come out. My heart raced as the teacher pulled a paper out of her table and started announce the results. My friend got 100 percent, my heart was beating so fast as the teacher announced the person before me, almost there. "Amy, 99.5." My heart sank. 99.5? The teacher spoke the second time, "You got one number wrong on the division page, that counts 0.5 percent." She sounds disappointed, but I was more disappointed. The bell rang and I walked out of the room. In the next test of language the following day, I checked my work and did it well. From that lesson I learned that everyone make mistakes and mistakes are valuable.

2) I glided down the ice, practicing my skating skills. It was another hour at my skating lesson. I skated toward my class, and greeted my teacher. The teacher was teaching me how to spin on the ice, I tried by myself and fell with a loud thud. My knees was hurting as I continued skating, and as I speed up, I tried to spin again but failed. Within half an hour, I tried again and again, and finally, I was able to do it. From this lesson I learned that no matter how hard things are, if I tried hard, then I would success.

3) It was a sunny day in summer break, in China. I was at my grandma's house, packing up books and sheets into my bag. It was the first day of my math lesson. I stand up straight and followed my mom outside. I was a bit nervous as I walked down the street. There's restaurants, shops, and supermarkets built up in a street line. Unlike Canada, there's hundreds of people walking down the streets, there's people chatting and playing, there's people eating food and hurrying to work, there's students going to the school in uniforms and yellow hats, and there's adults with a suitcase in one hand and whispering, talking to the other. We walked into a small alley with lines and rows of stores. After a ten minutes walking, finally, we could see the small building named in Chinese. My heart was about to jump out of my chest as I walked in. My mom had a small conversation with the person at the front and we walked straight toward my class. During the class, the teacher asked a question and I answered it completely wrong, I was really embarrassed. After that day I studied hard and the next day, my teacher was surprised and amazed how well I did. From that lesson I learned that if I put efforts into something I want to achieve, then I would accomplish it.

Since failure, over and over again, is a prerequisite to become an expert, so it is the ability to persevere and remain motivated through failure. For my experience of failure, I would like to talk about playing piano. It is a hard thing to do for persisting to play piano. Because you have to practice it every day. One day when I was seven years old, I did know how to play a new song, so I cried. My mom walked to me and said, “If you have a problem just don’t cry, you should face it and find a solution to solve it.” I stopped crying, and tried to play at best that song patiently, I found when I overcame the problem I was so proud. From then on, I enjoyed practicing piano more and more.

My failure was is hockey a few years ago I had the puck and I would skate down the ice until I was going to get ready to shoot but that was when I looked up and noticed I was heading toward my own net then I turned around and went the other way. The most Embarrassing part is that I was by the middle of the ice at the red line and I skated toward my net when I was closer to there end and my net was far.
1. I went toward my own net because I thought I was going to the enemy's net
2. I felt like that people would start to think I suck at hockey since I was going towards my net.
3. I learned to start to look up in hockey

My failure is in soccer. I was playing in the game, and the ball was really close to my net. It was indoor soccer, and layli was on my team. So without thinking I pick up the ball and then i relizesed something really important. I PICK UP THE BALL AND I WAS NOT IN NET! That meant in was a Penalty kick. Guess who was in net that day, if you guessed layli, then your right. She had a look in her face like she might kill me. I was so embarrassed! Sky I waited for the girl on the other team to take the kick. Guess this she missed the net! I was so happy that my mistake did not cost the team a goal.

What I learned from this was..............

1. Always stay focused
2. Don't pick up the ball in soccer

P.S sorry layli!

i've learned that that I should focus more
And not to touch the oven again.

1. when in the world are they going to give our tests back? I thought. After a while, they finally did. I looked at my page. An F? What? I noticed that I accidentally did the opposite of what I was supposed to do!

Lesson: CHECK YOUR WORK!

2. I walked into the class. I got the test. Suddenly, I couldn't remember ANYTHING. I sighed. The next week, I wrote everything down again and again. I could remember everything!

Lesson: When studying for a test, it is better to write the things down instead of just looking

3. I sat down. My teacher played two notes. My instinct told me one thing but, I said another thing. It turned out that my INSTINCT WAS RIGHT!!!

Lesson: ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR INSTINCTS!!!

I was trying to cut something with scissors. the dead line for when it was done was not to far away and me and Kate had a lot to do. so I got some scissors. I started to cut it took me 10 minutes to realise that I wasn't holding them right. I fixed it and it still didn't work I didn't figure it out so I garbed another pair of scissors. I tried them and it still didn't work I was trying to cut to meaning piece of paper at once. So I did it one by one after I left the cutting to Kate.

My biggest mistake was when I tried out for soccer, it had not bean long since I got back from Australia I was very jet-lagged but I stilled tried out. I was so tired I almost fell asleep every time I got a water break I had to pour water on my face. I did not make the team that time but I did a month later!

PS: The time I was trying out would be like 2 am!
