How Sugar Affects our Brains: Changing the Physical Mind for Best Results

6/4/2015

I saw this very neat video on how sugar affects our brains.  This video comes from Ted Ed, the education side of ted talks.  This is one of their most watched videos ever.  Why do you think it’s so popular?  Watch the video and then write down three thoughts, wonderings, or questions that you had regarding this video.  The brain is such a cool part of our body, and works with our physical, mental, and emotional well-being.  Changing the way we think, we eat, and our negative habits, helps us change the way our brain functions, which will give us better day to day lives.  In your blog post answer:

Question 1: Write your three wonderings, learnings or questions and as a further challenge, can you find 5 items in your kitchen/fridge that don’t have sugar in them?  Write them down.

Question 2:  If you were a parent, what rules would you impose on your children to help them grow up healthy?  Write down 3 rules that you think would be fair.

Challenge 3:

Can you go 24 hours without eating any processed sugar?  Good Luck!

- Mary's organic original crackers
- Nut Thins
- Eggs
- Water

Rules:
- Treats only once a weeks
- Screen time

1. What is the difference between the different types of sugars? 2. Why do we have different sugar receptors in various parts of our body? 3. How come dopamine doesn't level off when you eat sugar over and over again?

Five things I found in my fridge that don't contain sugar are corn, green beans, eggs, lettuce and tomatoes.

2. My three rules will be finishing all you vegetables before leaving the table, eating fruits rather than man-made snacks and drinking water instead of flavored water.

3. NO! I will try but I won't make it.

1. I was amazed by how sugar can be addicting like a drug.
2. I wonder why our brain responds to different flavors in different ways.
3. How can sugar be sooo effective in our brain?

1st thing I would do as a parent is just not keep to many junk foods in my house.
2nd thing that i would do is just let them free because if you don't introduce them to sugary sweets they wont eat them or crave them as much.

No way I could go 24 hours without sugar like are you kidding me brownies are my life.

What I learned from that video is that your brain has a reward system for when you eat sugar.
Everything in my fridge has no processed or bad sugar. but five things would be kale, raspberry's, melon, celery, and apples.

3 rules I would have would be no treats if you are not being good and if you are not doing well in school, also I would make surenthat they are getting physical activity a lot of times so they can stay in shape, and finally they have to cut down on screen time but just enough to make then happy and having fun.

Yes i did go 24 hours without eating sugar
