Building Characters!

This week we had the pleasure of chatting with author Christoper Tozier (@oliviabrophie). He was incredibly inspiring, and offered us tons of tips on our writing, what it’s like to be a writer, and challenges that writer’s face. Something he spoke about was the importance of developing character, and creating characters that are 3 dimensional. Your task this week is two parts:

Write down one thing you learned from Chris during his talk. (Gent, you’re excepted from this part)
Create your own character that you will use in a story one day. For this character, they must have:

a name
a few favourite things

3 personality traits (e.g. funny, humble, disturbed, etc. )
a flaw (something that can create conflict)
how would they react in a difficult situation (e.g. they didn’t do their homework)

Write down all of these things in your post below. When you’ve done that, write a paragraph from their perspective as they start their first day of grade 6. I’m so excited to see the characters that you create!

Favorite things:
Poutine, Tacos, Milkshakes

Flaw:
Has a boss that despises him. (39 years old)

Bad situation:
Coby is a PE teacher for elementary students(Physical Education) and one day, he woke up on the wrong side of the bed and made the entire class do 20 laps around the gym, But there was one thing pretty bad about that...
"Everybody do 20 laps!"
"Mr. Quinn, I can't really run that long becaus-"
"No excuses, run!"
What Coby didn't know is that the kid had asthma. DUN DUN DUN!

One thing that I learned is that it doesn't take like 10 mins to create a character. If you don't spend any more time on it, expanding your character to make it as realistic as possible, it won't catch the reader's attention as much.

1 thing I learned: That you need to focus on the plot as well as the characters because one without the other will become boring.

Character:
Name: Clarence
Favorite things: Cleaning, cheese, fighting, and watching people.
Personality traits: Curious, Decisive, Cultured, Punctual, Unrestrained ,Cruel.
Flaw: the people that he knew always found that he had 'no filter', 'rude', and 'could never understand what he was saying'. So they avoided him.
Difficult situation: If he was at a party he would be afraid of messing something up and saying something offensive that could lead to something worse.

I remember that Chris said that one of his books took a year to write -- that is long. It is hard work to be a writer.

My character's name is Joshua, Josh for short. He likes hiking, climbing trees, collecting broken toys to repair, and sushi.

Josh is adventurous, but shy, and thoughtful.

His flaw is that he gets angry when people don't show appreciation for the things he does.

In difficult situations, Josh runs away and looks for a tree to climb.

Josh got off the number 564 bus. Here he was at a new school, in a new town. He was the new kid --- again. Josh hated that his family moved so often, but it gave him lots of opportunities to explore new places. On the drive to school he saw a couple of trails covered with green bushes, and trees with lots of branches, perfect for grabbing onto and climbing up. Josh adjusted his backpack and sighed; the kids were all looking at him. He felt his face growing red. Nervously, he pulled a Bionicle toy out of his bag, hurled the bag back on his back, and started to move the toy between his fingers. The toy started to change shape and transformed in his hands. Josh felt less nervous. Kids started to crowd around as the Bionicle became a flying machine. "Cool'" one kid with hair that fell in his eyes, said. Josh smiled with pride as he gave the flying machine to the kid. Just then, Brad, who was known at St. Bart's Public School as a bully, yelled "What a baby. Playing with his little toy." Josh felt the rage building in him and he began to run for the cluster of trees at the edge of the school yard.

1. thing that i leaned from Chris's talk was that it takes a looooooooooooooooooooooooooogggggggg time to make and 1% is used in the book

hi my name is jack and i am normal kid i do math and love break but when gym come around, i start to yak and people make fun of me at me but now i have train my self to just over my fear of GYM and have friends! but i will be a hard but.... i will over come it!

I learned that you need to create emotions in readers.

Characters:
Name: Gunther the Chinchilla
Food: Grass and Hay
Traits: Sleepy, Independent, Intelligent
Flaw: Dosen't like when kids hold him
Situation: If in a difficult situation he will go hid under a pile of hay

I am peacefully sleeping on my pile of fresh hay when I hear the door open and the sound of feet shuffling on the new tile floor. When I finally get up from my hay I see faces squished up against my glass case, I rush back under my hay, frightened by the faces, what were they doing up touching my freshly cleaned glass, I thought these kids were taught better, is it their first time seeing a chinchilla! Then it hit me, these aren't the little kiddies I'm used to, Mrs. J reminded me last night, this is my new grade 6 class. I hope they are responsible at taking care of me, or else.

My character:
Name: Evan
Favorite Food: Tacos
Personality: popular, funny, athletic
Flaw: Thinks he is always playing sports
Situation: If he got in trouble for tackling someone then he would tackle them and run.

Evan had entered school, his first day of Grade 6! He walked around meeting everyone. But then when the bell rang he saw someone and tackled them. They fell to the floor. But they got up and high fived them. They walked to class and when the lesson started he jumped and tackled the new kid Bobby. Then he got sent to the office. He was walking when he smelled tacos. His favorite! But he had to go to the office. He kept walking. When he got there the principal asked why he tackled Bobby. He said "I dunno" and tackled her then ran. That was his first and last day of school.
(He was expelled)

Here’s my story;
It was the first day of grade 6, Lilly couldn’t be more board.
The day started off with her parents waking her up to go to school. Lilly was thinking about how she hated the idea of a bunch of kids going to a building to learn things for 10 hours then coming home and having to do homework that they give you. When the weekend finally comes you have to do homework and that takes up your weekend.
“You’re going to be late for your first day of school Lilly!”, her mom yelled to her as she got Lilly’s older brother Zach ready. He was in a wheelchair because he had been born with paralysis, he was going to grade 9 and was very nervous.
“I’m coming!” Lilly shouted back. She found her backpack in her mess of a room and stuffed what she thought she needed, went downstairs and got on the bus.
The bus driver gave Lilly a strange look when entered the bus, Lilly always wore all black, her mom hated the way she dressed but figured it was just a phase that Lilly was going through. Lilly went to the back of the bus and got a seat next to someone she had never seen before. Lilly wouldn’t know most people though because she was going to her first day of middle school.
All of sudden the boy sitting next to her said, “Hey, my name is Bo. You are going to my best friend for the school year we are going to do everything together that I want to do and we will always protect each other.” This was a weird outburst and Lilly decided to act rationally, well, rationally for Lilly. She got up and gave hive a fist to the face which made him cry and bleed.
The bus driver saw the whole thing and put stop to it.
When they got to school Lilly was sent to the principal's office. The principal's name was Ms. Walker. She was short and stout, she wore glasses at the end of her small nose, a grey blazer with shoulder pads. But the things that really stood out were her enormous heels that were a dull shade of beige and she used them to make up for her height but you could tell that they were uncomfortable because of the way her eyes and forehead would clench every 15 seconds or so. As she walked into the room she was furious. She set down a package of parchments on her desk as she was thinking how she would start her rant. She collected her thoughts and said
“I can’t believe you punched someone on the first day of school!”
“In my defence…”
“I don’t want to hear it young lady”
“...but”
“That’s it!, you are going to detention for 5 months and that’s final!”
“I can’t make it”
“And why is that?”
“Uhhhh...”
she scoffed “Now you are going to feel my wrath” the principal slammed the door.

Curtis Fox in his room black with skulls making a plan to ruin Zeus and take over the world.
Miss Fox says " Curtis i'm giving the laptop to your little sister now"
" But i need it now for world domination -- i-i -i mean homework" Curtis protested.
" Your 5 year old cute sister needs it now "
" Only for 30 minutes If she has to"
" Yay " Says his little sister.
Curtis finishes his plan, To upload a virus that hypnotizes everyone to make him leader. But if they don't have a device he will project it from stealing a satellite. Then capture Zeus for cursing him with misery for stealing his lighting bolt for the third time. When he captures Zeus he will beg for mercy then forgive him. Genius!!!! Curtis got his laptop from his sister but his sister already attached a file! Curtis left the tab open! - Favourite Food: Sweet Chilli Shrimp
- Fa mi Mali is very athletic, strong, and he is quite a comedian.
- He takes school as a joke.
- When he hasn't finished his homework on time, he asks his parents to do it for him. He promises he will do it next time (never will).
Today is my first day of grade 6! Guess what I brought Sweet Chilli Shrimp, today for lunch. I don't know anybody because I'm a new student at River Oaks Public School. Now we are heading to the classroom. We got up, so we put our things on the ground, and the teacher introduced him to us. "Hello students, I'm Mr. Steltman, how was your summer vacation"? We all answered good. Now we had just started a name circle, and when I had to say my name, me like, Hello I, Fa mi Mali. How you all doing on a fine day like this? The teacher said good, and nice to meet you! Class say hello to our student Fa mi Mali, he came all the way from Trollville, USA. I was, so excited that it was my first year at this school. Just as I smiled the announcements came on, and they said that they are having Floor Hockey Try Outs. I was, extravagant because I am excellent at hockey, and I could make the team (Hopefully). I got ready into my gym clothes, to make the team, and brag a little when I do. The try outs were over, and it was home time, since school ending super early today. When I got home I just remembered that my tutor's homework, that he assigned me that was due today, and I didn't know how to do it, so I asked my parents to do it, but I told them it was a school thing that they had to do, so she didn't suspect a single thing. Meanwhile I was playing Xbox. My parents finished my tutor's homework, and all I needed to do was relax on my couch.
Today was great I should do this more often.

Another year of learning stuff I already know... Oh,hi I didn't see you there. My name is Jackson Durion and I am a genius. I am also getting myself ready for another year of boringness,grade 6. "Jackson the bus is leaving!" The person that was just screaming her head off is my mother. Well I guess I should get going. I climb onto the stinky school bus as the doors close,almost cutting me in half. After a painful twenty minutes in the foul smelling machine I finally arrive to a place called school. I wait until all the other people on the bus file out and then I pick up my bag and get ready to get off to. "Your life must stink." I say truthfully to the bus driver as I get off. "What did you say you little brat!" I don't stick around to hear the rest of his shouts,but I think I heard some cursing and other stuff that isn't school appropriate. When I walk into my new school,which I haven't bothered to learn the name,all I can think of is this. Again? This looks like my old school! I just sigh and suddenly a man that has one heck of a moustache is beside me. "Welcome to Flowerhaven Public School!" He says in a booming voice. I don't understand why all principles think that the have to yell when I am right beside them. "Here is your class John!" He gives me a slight push toward the class before I get to tell him my name is Jack. The teacher says all this dumb mumbo jumbo and I tune her out. "It is time for lunch class." Mrs.Humburger tells us. The class bully who I don't know is the class bully tells me I am as stupid as a rock during lunch so I snap back at him that if my brain was a rock his would be a microscopic pebble. It takes him a while to get it but he finally does. He elbows my face,hard and I can feel the blood gushing out. I am mad and pissed off so I throw a couple of punches and kicks but he just laughs and levels me with a punch in the gut. Moustache man is now right behind us looking furious. "OFFICE NOW!" We both head to the office and wait for our parents to come. My mother tells me in the car of how disappointed she is and I can only think of one thing. This is only the first day.

One thing that I learned from Chris is that your ideas don't just come when you want them to, you need to take time and figure your writing out.

MY CHARACTER
Name: Hailey Wailey
Favorite Food: Double triple chocolate fudge cake
( with a scoop of ice cream on the side )
Traits: Secretive, Shady , " Popular "
Flaw: She lies a lot

Situation: Hailey Wailey also known as Hailey Reman (she does not like her last name) . She also lied about her age on Instagram,snpachat,twitter, and e-harmony (don't ask). She lies to all of her friends to make them know her as someone she is not.
She eats Double triple chocolate cake all the time and she tells her
"FRIENDS" that she is on a spinach only diet. One day she forgot to hand in her homework and her excuse/lie was " I stepped in a puddle on the way to school" she kept lying every week and eventually she got all F's and lost all her friends and ate Double triple chocolate cake all night.

Something that I learned from our author talk was that you actually have to spend some time fully developing the character before you start writing.

My character would probably be me, I feel like there would be no better person to use as a character than yourself because lets face it, you have both been living in the same house since you were born and you know every little secret about each other but for this we had to make a character so I made up one!

My Made Up Character:
Name: Maya
Favorite Food: Gulab Jamuns (Indian dessert)
Personality Traits: Kind, Helpful, Loving ect.
Flaw: Aggressive
Reacting to Situation Because Of Flaw: Tell the truth even if it means more trouble.

..........as I was walking through the hallways trying to find my class, it hit me, like literally I was greeted by a falling boot covered in mud. "Great" I thought just the perfect way to walk into a new class. I ran to the bathroom to clean my dress when I slipped and fell into the muddy disgusting water. That was it, I am not going to this school ever again. The End

One thing I learned from Chris Tozier is, revising and editing takes time, the same amount of time it takes to write the novel, and is very important.

Character: Lequifa
Favourite Food: Sausages
3 Personality Traits: cry baby, drama, selfish
A Flaw: Nasty and a bad dancer.
How Lequifa would act in a difficult situation: Flip her hair and roll her eyes and then cry.

Today was my day, it was the school talent show and I was ready for my amazing dance skills to come into place. People say I am a bad dancer, but I just flip my hair and roll my eyes, and then hide in a closet and silently cry. I think and I know I am the best dancer and best act in the talent show! I got my hair and makeup done. Big hair and bright eyes, with of course the whole bottle of foundation and powder. I was announced on stage as "The AMAZING Laquifa!". As I walk on stage I chew my gum loudly and as some people say "like a cow", but their just haters. I twirl my hair as the music comes on. I am dancing to Beyoncé, single ladies. The crowd starts to boo. I flip my hair and roll my eyes once again. I start to trash talk to the audience, as I walk off the stage but once I leave there is laughter. I stomp back on the stage and gave my last and final words, that you might not want to hear. It was so nasty I was expelled.

What I learn the from talk with Chris Christopher is... It takes less than a year to make a book. Also it takes less than a year to edit the book.

My character named is Mary Silk. Her favorite food is fish and chips. Her 3 personality traits are good-natured, friendly and calm. Her flaw is naive.

It was the first day of school, she was looking forward to seeing her old friends again. The one friend she really wanted to see was Mia, her partner in pranks. They had never met a prank they didn't like. But this year they want to pull of the greatest prank ever on the Principal.

A few things I learned from Christopher Tozier is that, character has to have personality, their character traits have to evolve in the story or it has no meaning at all. I also learned that editing your writing is really important or else it has a very unlikely chance of it getting published.

Rose loves ❤️ All her electronics and her social media life

Rose is a big diva and does modelling.

She has a mortal enemy named Sally who loves bugs.

Rose hates bugs.

Rose is 18.

Rose has a really annoying brother who is 6 yrs old.

Her parents names are Tiana and Tanner

The problem in this story is that she hates bugs A LOT!!!!😤 She is paired up with Sally (her mortal enemy ) to do a ad for modelling and it involves kissing ,touching,feeling,smelling ,looking at those ugly gross creepy crawly creatures.She was forced to do as told or else she would be FIRED .Guess what ,they were filming live on air and if I told you why happened you would probably hate bugs too.So let's leave it to that.But it involves a lot of bug squishing,screaming and slime squirting .....all over Rose !

One thing I learned from Christopher Tozier, Is that you have to put just as much time editing your book as writing it.

My character will be described now.
Name: Josh Lee
Height: 5 ft 1 in
Weight: 91 pounds
Grade: 6
Hobbies: Soccer and Rugby
Character traits: responsible, stressed, fun.
Flaw: he gets really bad acne.
How they would react in a difficult situation: He goes out with his friends when his mom told him to walk his dog, so he goes out realizes that he has to walk his dog. He says he has a soccer practice and sprints home then asks his neighbor to walk his dog, then plays COD.

It was Josh's first day of grade six at his new school, he wasn't the most popular kid in his other school, but now was his chance to restart. He got to school arriving right on time but then he notices the kid that bullied him at his old school Jeff, walking to the same teacher that Josh had. Josh hoped something has sparked that kid to make him something better than he was before. We all got into class and the teacher said, "everyone I hope to have a fantastic year with you guys, and to make you better students."Josh's teachers name was ms Monari. "Now class may you all find a desk and take a seat," of course Jeff took a seat right across from Josh, they all sat down and then Jeff gave Josh a nasty look. Their second period was gym. They all gathered together in the middle of the gym, and the teacher said "hello everybody my name is mr Carmen, and today we will be playing dodgeball." Dodgeball wasn't Josh's best sport, really he just didn't have that great of and arm. Now Jeff on the other hand plays dodgeball actually as a sport, so Josh wasn't a happy camper. They made the teams, Jeff wasn't on Josh's team, and then the game started. Josh was playing back, for mostly all of the game but at the end there was just a ball lying just a bit in front of Josh so he took the risk and jumped up and grabbed the ball, but then cablamo, he was down. He was lying on the ground and they Jeff walked bye and rudely said "ha ha dirtbag", that was it for Josh. Then he told the teacher he wasn't feeling good then called home. TOOO BEEEEE CCCOOONNNTTTIIINNNUUDD

Story

Wow my first day of grade 6, this is going to be fun. I can't wait to meet all the new people at my new school. My family moved from Nunavut to the big city of Calgary. I hope it will be much better then where we lived...

2 hours and 59 minutes later...

oh, no. oh no no no no no no no no!!! I forgot that this school only has a lunch break, no snack, and I forgot the note that I was supposed to give to Mr. Thompson. It's to late now. I will just have to get as close to the fresh air outside as I can. Maybe I can do it if i build a catapult... no, I don't have enough materials. I guess this is goodbye world

Robert was going to his first day of school in grade 6. after home room he had science. his science teacher told the class they were going to make sparklers out of chemicals. when he finished he got the teacher to light it. after that it wasn't sparkling it was on fire! he tried to blow it out but it didn't work so he took what he thought was water and poured it on the fire. when he poured it on the fire he realized he poured the rubbing alcohol used to clean the science tools. the fire was on the ground now and spreading through the carpet and now the hole entire ground was on fire!

What I learned from Chris is that it takes one year to get your book edited and another year to get your book published.

Frist day of grade 6...

"The first day of grade 6" Beth said to her mom, "Are you excited are you going to make a lot of friends?" "I hope so".

At school...

"When I get to school I first go to the office and get my schedule, my first class is Science with Mr. Sam. When I walk in they are starting the attendance so I rush in and take a seat at my desk, then I notice that everyone is looking at me oh, I forgot to say I have braces anyway, when the class is over I'm walking in the hallway and someone bumps me and my books fall out of my hands and the other person looks at me and says "Watch where your going" And I get so mad I have to go to the cafeteria and have my lunch. In my lunch I have a bun and a butterscotch candy and some other snacks next class is my math class with Miss. O.

One thing I learned when Chris is that it takes less work to write a book than it does to edit a book.

The First Day Of School...

I woke up supper early got dressed and went down stairs usually her dad was still down there drinking his morning coffee but this morning he wasn't. He was already gone Lulu was furies she Didn't say bye to her dad. She said to her mom "were is dad" her mom said "he had to go into work early today. But that wasn't a good reason for Lulu to give up she wanted to say bye to her dad. She made him come home and say bye. By the time Lulu got to school first period was almost done her teacher's name was Mrs.Rathburn the strictest teacher in the school when Lulu got to her desk the teacher came over and said ...............
