Mr. Steltman - Redirecting ...

Holiday Homework - Thanks for such a great start!

12/23/2016

Thank you all so much for being so great!  It’s been a true pleasure getting to know each of you and you’re all unique learners and great characters.  Our year has been great so far, and I know it will continue on that trend.  For your blog post over the holidays you only have one task.  Can you write a postcard to the class that thanks them for something specific that they’ve done or how they’ve made you feel this term.  Think of a time that being in our class has been fun, funny, positive, etc. and thank the class for that moment.  Then as the second part of the blog, post one resolution that you have for the new year.  A resolution is something specific that you’re going to try to do or improve on.
I can start with my example:  Thank you 6-2 for all the kind and caring words that you’ve written or shared with me just before the holidays.  It’s so nice to hear that you’ve been enjoying learning in class.
My resolution for the new year is to try incorporate more outdoor experiences in our classroom next term.
Sincerely, Mr. Steltman

Sharing Traditions: Celebrating Each Other!

We live an amazing country and in our country we all celebrate the holidays differently.  There are many different religions, traditions, and celebrations.  For your blog post this week, your job is to describe, in detail, your favourite holiday tradition that you celebrate with your family.  This can be related to your religion, the winter holidays, or anything else that your family celebrates.
I think that this time of year is a great one for thinking about our families and what great things we do with them.  These are the traditions that will live on in your memories as you become older.  So, take some time to think about what you really enjoy with your family and describe it for us!  Let us live the experience alongside you!

Exploring Abaco Blue Holes with National Geographic

This week, we had the chance to hear what it was like to explore the Abaco Blue Holes with National Geographic and Exploring by the Seat of your Pants.  This sounded like an incredible adventure and really allowed my mind to wander and wonder about all the things that could exist in the ocean that we as humans, haven’t discovered yet.  This week, for your blog post, can you write a short story where you are the explorer underwater and you discover a new species of fish or creature deep in the water.  Make it an adventure story with a clear conflict, climax and resolution.  As a further option, you could have something difficult happen and talk about how you would work through an emergency underwater (think about the “Sanity breaths” that Dr. Kenny was talking about.
Let’s be EXPLORERS and tell our stories from the Blue Holes!

Look UP!

The video above always strikes me so strongly and makes me feel emotional.  It also makes me feel guilty; guilty because I also struggle with looking down and not always being present. For your weekly challenge and blog post this week, I would like you to take at least 3 days where you do not use your tablet or computer (unless for homework) after school.  Can you take a few nights off.  For myself, I will put my cell phone’s ringer on and leave it on a shelf once I get home.  Your goal is to be present with your family.  I’m going to give 100% attention to the three girls at home so.  Once you’ve had your three days being present, write down a paragraph that explains what it was like without your device.  Was it hard? Was it worth it?  Did you get a chance to talk about something that you otherwise wouldn’t have?  Tell us about your experience.  Use descriptive writing to make it feel real.
Let’s Look UP!
