Our Class Precepts

This quote, from Mr. Browne, in our class novel, Wonder, really struck me when I read it.  I've been going over it in my head and the idea of precepts that guide your life seem very powerful.  Sometimes our lives are going so fast that we barely notice how we're living.  This week, I want you to take some time to think about what precepts you follow in your day-to-day life.  After you have written your precept, write a few sentences that describe why you think this is so important to your life.  These should be your own words (see my example below).  This will directly relate to our biographies and our "what will your verse be" assignments.
As an example,
I think that the precept "Be honest, be true, to yourself and others too" is a precept that helps me shape the direction of my life.  I value honesty from family, friends, colleagues and students, and it's very important to me that I offer this in all aspects of my daily life.  I think that being true to yourself, who you are, is extremely important and will help you succeed.
Please write your precepts and comments below.  Feel free to read and respond to other peoples precepts as well!

A Pelican Learns To Fly:  Practice Descriptive Writing.

9/18/2014

Watch the video of the pelican learning to fly. Think back to what we learned this past week about descriptive writing: using all five senses to describe something, making it seem real to the reader, grabbing the reader with powerful adjectives.  Imagine you have to describe this to someone who cannot see the video and all they will have are your words.  Write a paragraph that describes this flight.  Pay attention to the scenery, the emotions the people on shore must be feeling, and ALL FIVE SENSES!
If you need a sentence starter: "A lonely pelican floats through the clear blue water ..."

Not Easy, Worth It.

For our weekly homework, read the following quote. Write a paragraph about how you can relate this quote to our daily classroom life or into your daily life.
Some ideas:
  • what things might not be easy for you this year?
  • why is it better if it isn't always easy?
  • what skills does this quote promote?
  • can you make any connections to this quote?
  • if something isn't easy, what do you get from it?

Be sure to use the comment button below to add your paragraph.
