Building Characters!

3/29/2018

As we have been reading our novels over the past few weeks, we have spent some time looking at characters and character and I hope that you’re starting to notice that each character has his/her own story, background, things they like and don’t, and their own personality.  These characters are written that way by the author.
Today it’s your turn, you get to develop a character that you will use in this a few future blog posts.  For your post this week write:
Create your own character that you will use in a story one day.

For this character, they must have:
  • a name
  • a favourite food
  • 3 personality traits (e.g. funny or humble)
  • a flaw (something that can create conflict)
  • how would they react in a difficult situation (e.g. they didn’t do their homework)

Write down all of these things in your post below. When you’ve done that, write a paragraph from their perspective as they start their first day of grade 5.  I’m so excited to see the characters that you create!

Today we had such a neat opportunity to hear from The Water Brothers, who have an amazing program on TVO that showcases worldwide as well as local issues with water.  They showcased why water is important, some of the problems with water and some solutions that we can focus on to help the future.  For your blog post this week, I want each of us to make some promises, set some goals and actually do something.
Here’s the challenge:  For your post
  • Research on the dive deeper section of the water brothers website
  • Set 1 goal for yourself with regards to water.  Be specific about what goal you are working towards and when you want to achieve it by.
  • Write about one thing that you’ve done to consume less water this week.

March break is such an important time for students, families, and teachers.  It is a time of reflection, relaxation, and a time to recharge. Enjoy this week! While you do so, please try to take some photos of the different activities and things you do over the break (I’ll do it as well).  Put these photos in a quick slideshow with a 1-2 sentence caption for each and we’ll celebrate each other's break on the Monday when we come back! Post the link to your slideshow (anyone with the link can view) on the blog.

The Happiness Advantage! Building Gratitude Journals

3/1/2018

Welcome to our last week before March break, our first week since reports came out, the weather is changing, seasons and terms are switching over and we’re kicking into the final phase of grade five!  Before we start, I want to thank you for such an incredible year so far and I’m so excited to see what amazing things we can do with the rest of this year.  As we think about this second term and how we’re going to get better, be better, and create better, I think Happiness is key to our success.  Watch the above video, presented at a TED talk on happiness.  When you’ve finished watching, your job is to create your very own HAPPINESS /Gratitude JOURNAL.  There has been tons of research lately that explains how if we take the time to write down what we appreciate and the good things that happen in a day, our mental state becomes happier and more positive.
This week for your blog, I’d like you to work on the Google Doc called “Your Name -- Gratitude Journal” (attached to this weekly homework) and write down 3 NEW THINGS that you were glad happened, positive events and/or things you’re thankful for.  Post the link to your doc in the comments and we’ll share a few on Friday.
