Who Do You Notice More?

Picture
Look at this picture.  I love it for a variety of reasons, but the biggest reason it clearly says something in it’s simplicity.   We clearly notice the bird below first, they have set themself apart from their peers.  Let’s make this our challenge this week, let’s set ourselves apart, let’s be different, be better, be noticed for our positive choices.
Your task is to do ONE thing this week that people will notice and be proud of you for.  Do something that they don’t expect, something positive.  Write down how you set yourself apart and the results of that action.  Remember, you have all week to get this done so you don’t have to rush it.  Spend some time thinking about how you’ll make a difference.

The Happiness Advantage: Let's see if it works!

2/18/2016

The Happiness Advantage: I found this talk to be motivating and inspiring.  As we have been talking about wellness this past week, mental well being and how to be positive, I think the time is right for this talk. As he speaks (quickly) about the happiness advantage, I want you to pay close attention towards the end as he offers listeners the secret that his research has helped him find.  There is a key to gaining the happiness advantage!  For your blog post this week, I’d like you to start a Google Doc called “Happiness Journal”.  On this journal I’d like you to write down three NEW THINGS EVERY DAY that you are thankful for or that have made you happy!  Once you’ve done this for (at least 5 days), on the blog write down how it’s felt trying to think of things that are positive and happy each day.  Have you noticed a difference in your general attitude?  Write down your observations.

Look Up ... Who knows what you might be missing!

Watch the above video (please excuse the one curse word but the video was too good not to share, and I’m sure you’re mature enough to deal with it).  I found the story that the man told so powerful.  I had tears in my eyes at certain parts (especially the parts where they have a new baby).   With the story that is told in the video, the poet also offers a very clear message about technology and how “social media” is making us less social.  I really liked the idea in this message as I’ve been noticing at home, with Vera, that even when she watches tv, she does so with a pretend cell phone in her hand and is looking at it.  As cute as it is, it’s also very scary to me because she’s copying MY behaviour and if this is what I’m showing to her, then I’m missing out on opportunities to be in the moment with her and my family.   This video has inspired me to try and put my phone away when I get home from school and only check it 3 times during the night.  I hope that this allows me to be more in the moment and not miss out on great opportunities with my family.
For you blog post this week, I’d just like you to post a reflection on the video.  What did you think of it? How did it make you feel? What thoughts do you have now that you’ve seen it?  Does it inspire you to do anything now that you’ve seen it?
Do you think we spend too much time on our devices?  What ways do you think we could lessen our dependence on these devices?  How can we find more ways to truly "connect" with each other?

For your writing you can answer, some or all of the questions or add your own ideas.  I think it’s really important that we watch this video and think about what it's trying to teach us.

"I Have  A Dream" - The fight for Equality

2/5/2016

After watching the video of Martin Luther King’s Speech “I have a dream”, write a blog post about our next steps we can take to create a world where everyone is treated with equality?

What does equality mean to you? How can we change society’s views on accepting “differences” (race, gender, and sexual orientation)?
