Snow Day Memories!

1/28/2016

Watch the video above that a teacher has made about how she feels about snow days.  I found this video so entertaining, what a fun teacher she must be.  Snow days are the neatest thing for teachers because it’s one of those things that you don’t lose as you grow up.  Teachers and students love snow days the same way.  They’re a freebie day, one that you don’t expect and then when they come, they’re totally yours.
For your blog post this week, I’d like you to write about the best snow day that you can remember.  Remember, when you write a retell, it’s all about capturing the day by using descriptive words and bringing the reader into the experience with you.  I will start with my example.

I woke up early, thinking, yes, there’s definitely a chance.  I rushed to the window and excitedly pulled back the curtain.  “Jacey, wake up!!! SNOW DAY!!!”.  She didn’t move so I picked up the iPad and check the website, it was real, a real snow day!”  I knew that I would make the most of this day with both Jacey and Vera.  We called up our other teacher friends and after a gruelling hour of shovelling, met up with them for a snowy walk downtown.  As we all got hot chocolates and coffee at the shop, Vera fell fast asleep in the coffee shop.  After taking her picture, I realized, snow days are family days now!

Your turn!  Share your favourite snow day memory!

#likeagirl: Thinking and choosing words!

1/21/2016

Watch the video Always #LikeAGirl. Do you agree that  the term “Like a girl” has become an insult? How do you think we as a part of our schools community can change this?
For your blog post this week, please write down at least 3 steps that we as a class can take to begin to change and think about the words we say, and stop using “like a girl” as an insult.

The Kindness Of Others

1/14/2016

I read about this video the other night and I knew I needed to see it.  I was blown away by the fact that this monkey cared enough and it was a part of his genetic makeup to spend 20 minutes helping to revive the other monkey.  In our world, where sometimes we only hear about negative things or sadness in our country and others, I think it is so powerful and inspiring to watch this act of true kindness in nature.   This week, I’d like for you to pass on the positive feelings and write down a story of true kindness that you know about.  It can be something that you read, something that you’ve done, heard about, or that someone you know has been a part of but share the kindness story you know.  If you don’t know a kindness story, create your own by finding time to be kind to someone else (preferably someone who doesn’t expect it) and make their day.  Let’s have a Friday where we read about the amazingness of others and use their inspiration to make us strive to be better!

Your BEST You!

“Today is the first blank page of a 365 page book.  Make it a good one!”
January tends to be the time to reflect and as a class we have set goals and resolutions for ourselves.   During the holidays, I saw this picture and quote and saved it for when we got back.  I think it’s really neat to see each day as the first day of 365 page book, you can alway START writing the story of your BEST you!  For you challenge this week, can you write a paragraph that describes your best you?  If you could be your best you, what would you act like, how would you speak, what sort of things would you do?
I can go first,
If I were my best me, I would increase the time I spend focussing when I’m hanging out with Jacey and Vera.  I would make sure that I’m present when I’m with them and listening and responding to them.  My best would try to be calmer and would speak in lower tones both in class and at school.   My best me would try to SLOW DOWN, I find that I’ve been rushing a lot (since I was in grade school) and my best me would be sure to slow down my actions, my thoughts, and my physical self.  My best me starts TODAY!
Your turn! Write a paragraph that describes your best you!  We’ll share next Friday.
